194. Discourse against the Pharisees and Lawyers - (See no 284)
You may not remember this but in section 150 we discussed Defilement and we looked at Matthew 15:1-20, Mark 7:1-23, and Luke 11 37-41.
This section encompasses those passages and goes a little further.
If we don’t discuss what we have already talked about we will see some similarities in the synoptic accounts
Luke and Mark both discuss the Pharisees and teachers of religious law and how they like to be noticed by others.
In Luke and Matthew we find the phrase “What sorrow awaits…” several times.
Matthew uses the phrase 3 times to accuse the teachers of religious law and Pharisees.
All three times they are called hypocrites
clean the outside of the cup but the inside is dirty - vs 25
outward you look righteous but inward you are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness - 27
say you wouldn’t kil the prophets like your ancestors but you would finish what they started - vs 29
Luke uses the phrase six times to accuse the same group of people.
tithe every bit but lack more important things - vs 42
Love to sit in places of honor - vs 43
Like hidden graves corrupting others - vs 44
Crush people with unbearable religious commands but won’t help - vs 46
Build monuments for prophets you ancestors killed long ago - vs 47
Remove the key of knowledge to people - vs 52
John’s gospel just points out their hypocrisy via the story of the woman caught in adultry

202. On Treasures in Heaven - (See no 64)
We already discussed this in a previous week.
203. Watchfulness and Faithfulness
All three synoptic gospels revolve around the idea of being ready.
Matthew talks about the kingdom of God will be like
10 virgins and their lamps.
A homeowner knowing when his house will be broken into
A faithful servant vs an unfaithful servant
Mark refers to the coming of the Son of Man like a man going on a long trip with each slave given instructions and the gatekeeper to keep watch.
Luke starts with
being dressed for service having lamps burning waiting for the master’s return from the wedding feast.
He also talks about the homeowner who knew when his house will be broken into. And must be ready for the Son of Man
Talks about “A faithful, sensible servant…” VS 42-46a is almost word for word to Matt 25:46-50
John 13:4-5 is about Jesus washing the disciples feet. thing might be an odd place to put this text but it fits with Luke 12:37 where the master served the servant.
