Scriptures

Matthew 3:11–17 NKJV
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

I. Baptism of John

Lexical Summarybaptizó: To baptize, to immerse, to dip
Original Word: βαπτίζω Part of Speech: Verb Transliteration: baptizó Pronunciation: bap-TID-zo Phonetic Spelling: (bap-tid'-zo) KJV: Baptist, baptize, wash  NASB: baptized, baptizing, baptize, Baptist, baptizes, ceremonially washed, undergo Word Origin: [from a derivative of G911 (βάπτω - dip)] 1. to immerse, submerge 2. to make whelmed or soaked (i.e. fully wet) {used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism}
Rhema Word:
Baptism indicates a washing and an immersing. It will both overtake and wash away. To be immersed in a substance that washes away something or someone else and consumes or soaks an object or individual in it’s essence, indicating it’s presence.
John indicates that his baptism is and outward sign of repentance. It is a part of the process for those who have truly repented of their sins.
This is done because the Holy Spirit has done a work in their lives. The believers response should go deeper than emotional response. True repentance is revealed by consistent action.
Baptism 1 = Is declaration or repentance
Baptism 2 = R esults in empowerment and a proclamation of the Gospel
Baptism 3 = Causes refinement and purification

II. Baptism of Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit and fire… Jesus will send you the Holy Spirit. He will emmerse and Baptize you. It empowers you to serve.
A. Indwelling of the Spirit (Baptism In)
John 14:16–17 (NKJV) 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with (παρά; para; alongside) you and will be in( ἐν;inside) you.
John 20:21–22 NKJV
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive ( λαμβάνω, lambano; receive or to catch) the Holy Spirit.
Jesus breathed on them and they received the Holy Spirit. In a little while he will baptize them with the spirit.
B. The Baptism (Infilling) of the Spirit (Baptism with)
Luke 11:9–13 NKJV
9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
Acts 1:4–5 NKJV
4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
We see this come to fruition in Acts 2:1-4
Acts 2:1–4 NKJV
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit (πληθύνω;plēthynō,filled or furnish) and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
They will be empowered to spread the kingdom forward. A kingdom that will last forever.
Acts 2:37–39 NKJV
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
Spiritual fullness: the Holy Spirit
The predominant theological weight of 4130 lies in Spirit-empowerment. Nine occurrences (all in Luke-Acts) narrate the Spirit’s dynamic control.
1. John the Baptist: “he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb” (Luke 1:15).  2. Elizabeth: “Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:41).  3. Zechariah: “And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied” (Luke 1:67).  4. Pentecost: “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues” (Acts 2:4).  5. Peter before the rulers: “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them” (Acts 4:8).  6. The gathered church: “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:31).  7. Saul of Tarsus: “Brother Saul, … so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 9:17).  8. Paul at Paphos: “But Saul, also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, stared at him” (Acts 13:9).  9. The apostolic core at Antioch Pisidia (by implication following 13:52).

III. Baptism of Fire

Matthew 3:12 NKJV
12 His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
John says there will come a time when Jesus will separate the wheat from the chaff.
The wind of the holy spirit will separate the wheat from the chaff. The essential from the unnecessary. God will separate what is useable and fruitful from what simply takes up space.
As Jesus is building His kingdom, and one day he will separate the wheat from chaff. But we cannot deny that he is an unquenchable refining fire.
A. Refining Fire
1 Peter 1:6–7 NKJV
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
Jesus will allow the fire of trails to refine us and sanctify us. To purify our hears.
Pressure reveals cracks that need to be fortified. Cracks in our character or our resolve.
Pressure applied reveals to us who we really are
The Fire of trail removes the unecessary (helmet drop)
B. The Purifying Fire
There will come a time when God will purify the world with fire. All of fallen creation that is stained by sin will be burned away.
2 Peter 3:10 NKJV
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
Revelation 21:1 NKJV
1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.
