THIS WEEK DO NOT FORGET

PAUSE
Today, we are jumping back into our series walking through the Old Testament and all the places where the Holy Spirit appears.
If you started attending family church in June or July we tend to pivot off our main series in the summer.
That is why in June we preached through the book of Colossians.
In July, we love to do character studies and preached through several people in the Bible that you all asked for!
But today, we go back to our main focus on the Holy Spirit which is what we have been doing most of this year.
We have been looking at all the place in the Old Testament that the Holy Spirit was directly referenced and what he did in the lives of people.
Today, we will look at four passages where the Holy Spirit shows up and does the same thing in all four of them.
PAUSE
If you have your Bible with you, and I hope you do, would you open it with me today to
1 Chronicles 12
New Person Bible Connection:
If you do not have a Bible, that is ok!
After service, we will give you an AMAZING leather-bound study Bible!
Just go to ADD YOUR CAMPUS PLACE and get one for FREE!!!
If you look at verse 18….you will see where the Holy Spirit is directly referenced.
For those of you who are new to this series, we are looking in the Old Testament, or the first ½ of the Bible, for all the places where the Holy Spirit is referenced.
We are doing that to learn about all the ways the Holy Spirit helped people back then….and still does today!
PAUSE
Let’s read
1 Chronicles 12: 18
18 Then the Spirit came on Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said:
What Church????
Spirit came on
Yes, Spirit…meaning the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of God came upon this man named Ahhh-maaa-sigh
Amasai, chief of the Thirty, and he said:
And let’s pause here just for a second…
Who knows what chief of the thirty means?
Anyone?
Right!!!
King David’s LEGIT body guards.
For the men in the room…Let me share just a few of these EPIC warriors!
Men write this down in the margins of your Bible…
Read 2 Samuel 23 later today…
Or write down…study David’s might men…
But in 2 Samuel 23 you can read about several of these 30 mighty warriors.
Like Jo-Sheb Bass-she-beth, who killed 180 people with a spear in one battle!
Or Eleazar son of Dodo...who killed so many men in one battle that his hand became stuck closed around his sword.
Or one of my favorites, Ben- ann-eye–Ah, who one day got frisky and decided to go into a PIT on a SNOWY day and kill a lion!!!
Let’s jump back in….He said…
“We are yours, David! We are with you, son of Jesse! Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you.”
And remember, go back to where this passage started…
The Holy Spirit came upon this guy and filled him because God must have wanted David to hear this…
So God is saying..David….These guys are yours David…
They are with you, son of Jesse!
Success, success to you, and success to those who help you, for your God will help you.
This warrior was speaking a prophecy from God to David.
Now some of you might not know what prophecy is…
So, let’s clearly define it.
The Encyclopédie Britannica defines this way:
Encyclopédie Britannica definition of prophecy: A divinely inspired revelation or interpretation.
So here is the point everyone…write this down…
Anyone, from any background, can be filled with the Holy Spirit and speak God’s message through His power.
Repeat
And so the verse ends with:
So David received them and made them leaders of his raiding bands.
Which a good reminder is that you and I all have the choice.
If God speaks to us we can CHOOSE to listen or NOT.
It is your choice.
But the WISE choice is, of course, to listen to God.
PAUSE
Now move over to the next book in the Bible…
The next place the Holy Spirit shows up is in 2 Chronicles chapter 15.
Now let me give you a little context.
In Chapter 14 we learn that God’s people, living in Judah, were being lead by their king to move away from worshipping all the false idols of the people from the nations around them.
In 1 Chronicles 14: 2-5 you can clearly see that.
And later in that chapter you can see BECAUE they CHOOSE to seek God’s ways….
God blessed them and they won a MAJOR battle….
PAUSE
So that brings us to chapter 15, which says:
2 Chronicles 15: The Spirit of God came on Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him,
Now stop there…
Again…think about what we just said in the prior passage.
The Spirit…
The Holy Spirit comes upon now another guy…from a totally different time and place…
And God is again about to speak through him a message to A-sah the king.
So, remember what you just wrote down…God can speak through anyone from any background….
So, let’s read what God said through this guy.
“Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him.
If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.
3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law.
4 But in their distress they turned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them.
5 In those days it was not safe to travel about, for all the inhabitants of the lands were in great turmoil.
6 One nation was being crushed by another and one city by another, because God was troubling them with every kind of distress.
7 But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.”
Stop there….
That was God’s message.
Look at what we read…
What is the Holy Spirit communicating?
Well…look at verse 1… God is always there..
Verse 2…notice two IF’S…IF you seek him..IF you forake him…
AKA it is a choice…
You can follow God or not…
But look at the end of the passage…
IF…you follow God…
Look at verse 7….
IF you follow God…do NOT give up… you WILL be what church?
Rewarded…
PAUSE
So, the point is this builds off the last point…
Remember…. Anyone, from any background, can be filled with the Holy Spiritand speak God’s message through His power.
And here you can see….write this down:
Anyone, from any background, can choose to obey God and will be rewarded.
Repeat
PAUSE
Now flip forward to chapter 20, there we will see the next place the Holy Spirit shows up.
And the cool part to this passage…just like the prior one…is it ties to EXACTLY what we just said.
Check this out!
This is why you bring your Bible to church!
In verse 2, we see a VAST army comes against the king.
The king then makes a CHOICE…
Because again, you all have a choice…
But he chooses to seek God…
And, look in your Bible…verses 6-12 are the king asking God to help!
And the king models so well…
Look in your Bibles at verse 13…
ALL the POPLE of JUDAH ALL seek the Lord!!!!!
Talk about great leadership…
So, let me pose a question….you will see this in your notes…
How are you leading others toward seeking God?
Because this king did…
How are you doing at that?
ADD A SHORT example of how you are currently leading someone toward God….
So this king does that and then look at what happens in
2 Chronicles 20:14: Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, Levite and descendant of Asaph, as he stood in the assembly.
Stop here for just a second..
Here yet again… The Holy Spirit is speaking through ANOTHER person ANOTHER prophecy!
So if you have not fully accepted it yet…
God really can speak through anyone!!!!
Here is another random dude that has nothing really else about him in the Bible….
But the Holy Spirit is speaking through him here!
Verse 15:
15 He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem!
This is what the Lord says to you:
‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.
16 Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, ( and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel.
17 You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem.
Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’”
Jahaziel (Jazz-E-el) speaks this kind of crazy prophecy if you think about it.
Go to battle but let God do the work…
Go to battle and trust God to deliver you…
And we don’t have time to read it all today…so read it later…but if you look at the rest of this passage in verses 18-24, you will see the go…
They trust God and literally did ALL the work!!!!
In verse 25, all they do is show up…and plunder the army God took out!
PAUSE
I think we time for one more passage…flip over to chapter 24.
Let’s look at the next place the Holy Spirit shows up.
And look how amazing this is…
Litterally that question we just posed to you is the problem going on in this passage.
So pretty cool, how each passage and how the Holy Spirit worked tie to the passage coming next, where the Holy Spirit shows up!!
The Holy Spirit shows up in verse 20…But I want to read a few verses before to give context.
2 Chronicles 24:17-20 17 After the death of Jehoiada,
Stop there..
Jehoiada was the prophet of God.
So the prophet of God dies and…
the officials of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and he listened to them.
18 They abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and worshiped Asherah poles and idols. Because of their guilt, God’s anger came on Judah and Jerusalem.
Stop there..
So God’s guy dies.
And UNLIKE the last passage…
The king does NOT lead the people toward God…
No he leads them BACK to worshipping idols!!!
And God does NOT like that…so…verse 19…
19 Although the Lord sent prophets to the people to bring them back to him, and though they testified against them, they would not listen.
Note what the Bible says…
God sent multiple prophets to warn then to turn away.
To come back to God…
And they choose NOT to listen…
Because again…YOU have a CHOICE to follow God or not.
Then it says the Holy Spirit comes upon another guy…
20 Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said,
“This is what God says: ‘Why do you disobey the Lord’s commands? You will not prosper.
Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’”
They chose to walk away from God…
So, God walked away from them.
So let me end with one last question…
Will you choose to listen to the Holy Spirit and follow His leading in all areas of your life?
Repeat
Church…..
In all 4 stories we saw different groups of people.
They all had a choice.
To follow God or not.
To listen to the Holy Spirit speaking through someone else or not.
To follow the desires of their flesh or the desires of God.
And today…
Here you sit…
What choice will you make?
What choice will you make tomorrow at work, school, in your relationship, or on the sports field?
The choice is yours to make.
But let me suggest…
Choose God’s way and life will go better!
