The Heart for Evangelism 28
She Left
She left her water pot. Something more important was on her mind. She once was blind to the eternal but now Jesus has opened her spiritual eyes.
She came to the well to serve her self but suddenly she is interested in serving others.
We reflect on how Peter, James, John and James responded when they met Jesus, the left their father and their nets.
They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
When we get saved our focus changes. We now focus on “who needs Jesus next.”
How has meeting Jesus changed your focus?
She Went
When the Apostle Paul is describing the armor of God in his letter to the Ephesian church, he talks about “the shoes of the gospel of peace.”
shoe represent mission and movement.
The first two letters of the word “GOSPEL” is “GO”!
The call upon every saved person is to go.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
She Said
We have a gospel that must be spoken.
It is true that ours lives demonstrate the life changing power of the gospel but we are expected to proclaim the gospel.
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
But I say, have they not heard? Yes indeed:
“Their sound has gone out to all the earth,
And their words to the ends of the world.”
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
The Hinderance to Evangelism 27,31-34
The 12 disciples had been following Jesus for a little while. When they first met Jesus they also had a heart on fire to bring others to Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).
V27 The disciples returned with food and were shocked that he was talking with this woman. They did not yet realize what she realized.
they were wondering,” what are they talking about?”
Every thing Jesus did was to get the lost saved.
Some greatest hindrance to evangelism are comfort, apathy, and forgetfulness
Comfort - we get into ruts, and routine becomes comfortable. We get comfortable with our group, our friends, our church, and we loose our mission!
Apathy- we loose our fire and passion because of hurts and sins. We can get so caught up with ourselves we no longer are reaching sinners.
Forgetfulness - NEVER FORGET WHERE JESUS FOUND YOU AND WHERE HE HAS BROUGHT YOU!
3. The Harvest in Evangelism 35-42
a. The time is now 35
The ministry of salvation is at hand.
I have heard of relationship evangelism. I understand it is the approach that focuses on building a relationship over time with the hopes of an opportunity to share the gospel.
Jesus is saying here, you don’t have 4 months, get with it now.
b. The reward is Great 36-38
The greatest reward is being part of the world wide work of Jesus to save souls from hell.
I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
Sow - sharing the gospel
Water - praying for others to be saved
Reap - leading people to a personal relationship with Jesus
Her story was the bait that drew others to Jesus 39-42
He who continually goes forth weeping,
Bearing seed for sowing,
Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him.
