What do I believe God wants us to know? Goliath Must Fall
Why? There is promiseland that God has for us
What do I believe God wants us to do? Defeat Goliath by the strength of God
Why? God wants freedom and victory for us
ME/WE
Today we are beginning to venture into the life of David specifically we are going to camping out on one of the most famous stories of the Bible THE STORY OF DAVID and GOLIATH.
The reality for us a lot us we can relate on some levels to the DAIVD and GOLIATH story because there is a land, place, PROMISE LAND THAT God has called you to go to and for you to possess the land…GOLIATH MUST FALL
WE have tried the walk around GOLIATH
WE have tried the waiting GAME hoping GOLIATH will leave (oh you are still here)
We have tried to pray GOLIATH AWAY
BUT THE REALITY IS GOLIATH IS STILL THERE
And our GOLIATH is not 9’9” tall person but it is
FEAR, WORRY, and DOUBT
REJECTION (who do we think we are to defeat Goliath)
ADDITION or SIN
RELATIONSHIPS
COMFORT (I like it over here)
Can any of us relate to those types of GOLIATH’S or others?
WHAT GOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW IS GOOD NEWS THAT GOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW
1 John 4:4 ESV
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
GOD IS BIGGER THAN GOLIATH and GOLIATH MUST FALL AND WILL FALL WHEN WE WALK, FIGHT IN THE STRENGTH OF THE LORD
WE ARE GOING TO SEE IT TODAY IN THE LIFE OF DAVID
then over the next handful of weeks we are going to WALK through and SEE how we get victory over some of the giants we face such as
FEAR, WORRY, DOUBT
REJECTION
COMFORT
ADDICTION and SIN
ISOLATION
TURN WITH ME TO 1 SAMUEL 17 a
1 Samuel 17:1 ESV
Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle. And they were gathered at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.
who are the Philistines?
Friends of Israel? No
Enemies…they don’t like ISRAEL
AND Where did they reside?
They were SEA PEOPLE in the SOUTH WEST CORNER OF ISRAEL…primarly in the TRIBE of JUDAH…they are in the land of ISRAEL SHOW PICTURE
WHY?
Two reasons
1. Joshua and Israel didn’t fully possess the land
Joshua 13:1–3 ESV
Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess. This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites (from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim,
we have been here
Why Didn’t Joshua and Israel Drive Out the Philistines?
The Philistines Had Advanced Military Power The Philistines were skilled ironworkers, which gave them a significant technological advantage over Israel, who mostly used bronze at the time. Their weapons and armor were superior—something we clearly see in the story of Goliath, whose armor is described in great detail (1 Samuel 17).
They Were Associated with Giants and Deep Spiritual Rebellion While the Bible does not explicitly say the Philistines were Nephilim, some of their warriors—like Goliath and his relatives—were described as giants. These giants echo the ancient figures associated with the Nephilim, mentioned in Genesis 6, believed to be the offspring of fallen angels and human women. The presence of such figures represents not just physical threat but deep spiritual corruption. It helps us understand why God wanted their influence removed from the land.
The Philistine people were GIANT people living in Israel, BUG GOD HAD GIVEN THEM VICTORY and PROMISED THEM VICTORY.
And we see a principle at place when we do not completely finish the task God has for us to get RID of things that are bad and evil against us that they come back to bring destruction to us
But God who is rich in mercy wants victory for us
God is going to raise up DAVID
1 Samuel 17:2–3 ESV
And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines. And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.
SHOW PICTURE
1 Samuel 17:4–7 ESV
And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. And his shield-bearer went before him.
A champion…
how do you get the name champion?
By defeating someone esle
Champion is defeating multiple people
He is the champion of the whole nation of Philistine of giant people…this is a bad dude
Not only that he’s 9’6”
SHOW PICTURE
9’6”
armor 125lbs
spear head 15lbs
shield bearer
This is a HUGE MAN!!
1 Samuel 17:8–10 ESV
He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.”
- Instead of having a normal battle where both sides would come into the Valley of Elah the Philistines thought of a better battle at least for them to have is a representive battle where the nation of Israel picks one person to fight and the Philistines picked a person to fight and whoever won the fight won the war.
why have this blood shed???
how do you think the people in Israel felt? How would you feel facing Goliath???
1 Samuel 17:11 ESV
When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
FEAR!!!
1 Samuel 17:12–16 ESV
Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years. The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul, but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem. For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.
David was a teenager…not old enough to go to battle
40 Days…where have we seen this before?
1 Samuel 17:17–27 ESV
And Jesse said to David his son, “Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers. Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See if your brothers are well, and bring some token from them.” Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry. And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers. As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him. All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid. And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.” And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” And the people answered him in the same way, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”
For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
David sees the situation differently. He does not see the Goliath as man sees the Goliath, but as God sees the Goliath.
Who is the one cursing GOD and HIS people?
What happens next? Does everyone say your right David? who is going to defy our God!!!
NO, his brother gets angry.
The Giant of Fear of is Inside of our Camp
1 Samuel 17:28–30 ESV
Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.” And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.
- Eliab says stop show boating.
- Give up
- You cannot do it.
- You do not belong here.
- David’s brother is trying to bring fear into David’s life.
o Look you are the youngest. You are small.
o Some of this is coming out, I believe of his oldest brothers insecurities. The youngest is not supposed to be the strongest the eldest.
- David own family was against him.
o Who do you think you are!?!
o You are insignificant
o You are going to lose
o You are worthless.
WE HAVE MAYBE BEEN HERE BEFORE WITH OUR FAMILY
It is not just Goliath but it is GOLIATH and your family trying to keep you from the promisesland.
1 Samuel 17:31–37 ESV
When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him. And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.” But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
David said I’ll defeat him!
but you’re a youth!
David’s resume
1 Samuel 17:38–40 ESV
Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” So David put them off. Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.
5 stones? Goliath had 4 other brothers
1 Samuel 17:41–47 ESV
And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.” Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
WE are God’s people!
And there is a promise those who curse us in Genesis 12 God will curse!
1 Samuel 17:48–58 ESV
When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron. And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp. And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent. As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.” And the king said, “Inquire whose son the boy is.” And as soon as David returned from the striking down of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
What an amazing story!!

Application: Facing Your Giants

David didn’t defeat Goliath because he was brave, strong, or skilled with a sling—he defeated Goliath because he trusted in the living God. While Israel’s army saw an impossible obstacle, David saw an opportunity for God’s power to be displayed.

1. Your giants are real—but not unbeatable.

We all face giants: fear, addiction, insecurity, financial stress, broken relationships. These giants mock us like Goliath mocked Israel, telling us we’re too small, too weak, or too late. But the story of David reminds us that victory doesn’t depend on our size or strength, but on God’s presence and power.
“The battle is the Lord’s” (1 Samuel 17:47)

4. We need a greater David.

Ultimately, David points us to Jesus, the true and better David—who didn’t just face a giant, but defeated sin and death on our behalf. Jesus is the Champion who steps onto the battlefield for us. You don’t overcome giants by being like David. You overcome by trusting in the One David pointed to.
