Purposes of the Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s supper reminds us of our union with Christ and one another.

The word communion comes from a Latin word that means “sharing in common”.

1 Corinthians 10:16 “The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?”

2. The Lord’s supper is a remembrance of Christ’s saving work.

4. The Lord’s supper is a call to examine ourselves.

5. The Lord’s supper is an invitation.

John 6:35 “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

6. The Lord’s supper is a time of anticipation.

Luke 22:15–16 “And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.””

7. In light of all this, let us worship Christ for His once for all sacrifice for our sins.

Hebrews 10:10 “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
