The 10th Plague
The 10th Plague
Chapter 11 verse 4: Pharoah has the Israelite children murdered (Exodus 1:15-16). Later God destroys the firstborn of Egypt. Where do we see divine Justice in this action? Where do we see divine mercy?
Mercy:
God does not destroy all of Egypt
God hears the cries of the Israelites
Judgement:
God takes the firstborn.
God is crippling Egypt to destroy an oppressive culture that practices demonic worship. (1 Cor 10:20,Exodus 12:12,Psalm 86:8,Exodus 15:11)
“Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.
‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.
Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord;
Nor are there any works like Your works.
“Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods?
Who is like You, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
Passover
Passover
Lamb:
Lamb:
Israel:
Israel:
An unblemished lamb whose blood on the doorpost will protect the people of Israel from destruction.
They were to eat the flesh of the animal roasted over fire
Us:
Us:
1. Christ is our Passover Lamb
1. Christ is our Passover Lamb
Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
2. We are to partake in the body and the blood of Christ
2. We are to partake in the body and the blood of Christ
Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.
Bitter Herbs:
Bitter Herbs:
Maror is eaten during the Seder meal to represent the slavery’s bitterness. There are several herbs such as horseradish and others. Romaine lettuce is a staple.
Israel:
Israel:
We are reminded of the bitterness of the slavery and oppression of the Israelites by Egypt.
Us:
Us:
Salvation and redemption come through suffering. Suffering is not without meaning or value. It will often lead to freedom and growth.
Unleavened Bread
Unleavened Bread
Israel:
Israel:
This represents the haste or speed with which they left Egypt. They did not put leavening agents in the bread such as yeast. There was no time for the bread to rise. So, the bread is denser and does not rise.
Us:
Us:
This bread represents the broken body of Christ. He was sinless. Yeast is used to describe the pervasive effects of sin. Jesus also uses yeast to indicate the undetectable but undeniable transformative power of the kingdom of God.
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”
But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
And again He said, “To what shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened.”
You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.
Hyssop 12:22
Hyssop represents cleansing and protective through the lamb’s blood.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
