Watch clip.
When we say ‘I never, ever break that promise, ever’, is that truth or a myth? When God says, I never, ever break that promise, ever’, is that truth or a myth?
We can’t keep our promises all the time. Sometimes I mean to, but sometimes I just can’t.
Have you ever tried to keep a secret, but you just let it slip? Have you ever tried to keep a promise that you’d clean your room, or empty the dishwasher and just forgot? We mean to keep them but we’re just not able to.
Does God keep his promises? Does God follow through? I’m going to give you really quick highlight of the whole Bible, as the whole Bible is based on God making promises.
There was this guy, he was a sheep hearder from Mesopotamia, he lived about 4,000 years ago. His name was Abraham, and God made a promise with him. God said, he was going to make Abrahams name great, that a great nation would come from his children, that they would have great land and recieve a great blessing for all people.
The only issue was Abraham and his wife Sarah were very old and they didn’t have children and they couldn’t have children. But God said they would have a son anyway.
And do you know what happend? Many years later, while they were even older, they did have a son. God’s promise of a son came true. Fast forward that story another 450 years and that son had kids and those kids had kids and those kids had kids… and then there was a great massive amount of people from this family, but the problem was they were slaves in Egypt. And you know what happend? God used a guy Moses to help set these people free and took them to another land, you know what they called that land? The Promised land. It was the land promised to Abraham. Again, God kept this promises.
And you know what happened after that? Fast forward a bit and that great nation settled in the land (again what God promised to Abraham), they had kings, they weren’t good kings, but there was a promise that a king would come from the family of on of the good kings David, and this promised king would rule forever. There were also promises that this promised king would be born in Bethelam, that he would do no evil, that he would suffer for the sins of others, that he would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey, and a whole bunch of other promises were made. Like lots more. Here is a little graph about the promises and fuilment of just this king in the Bible.
And you know what happend? Fast forward a bit more and Jesus was born in Bethalem, from the family of king David. He lived the perfect life and died for the sins of the world. But even though He died, He rose to life again and is now ruling over this world in heaven.
And you know what happend then? Jesus made a promise that He would come back again and bring about a new heave and new earth for all those who trust in Him. Fast forward to today and this hasn’t happened, but what do you think about the promises God made so far? Do you think He will keep His word?
(Mythbuster music). Does God keep his promises? Absolutely yes. The bible says this: No matter how many promises God has made, they are yes in Christ Jesus.
Numbers 23:19 NIV
God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
Joshua 21:45 NIV
Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.
2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.
Application: People do break promises. But there is one who never, ever breaks his promises - God. God is trustworthy and faithful. We can be sure that His promise to save us, love us and give us a future will happen. We can trust his future promises to us.
The whole story of the Bible is the story of how God keeps His promises. God promised He would save people, and He has kept His word in Jesus. We can trust what God says, because He doesn’t lie and He keeps His word.
