Persistent prayer is the visible expression of unwavering faith in God

Notes
Transcript

Persistent prayer is the visible expression of unwavering faith in God.

Purpose: When we keep praying, we’re not just asking — we’re declaring our trust in God’s character, timing, and power.
    •    Jesus knew His disciples would face delays, opposition, and discouragement, so He told this parable “to show them that they should always pray and not lose heart” (v. 1).

Persistent prayer is proof of strong faith that believes God will act even when nothing seems to change.

Persistent Prayer Is Anchored in God’s Character

Luke 18:1 ESV
1 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.
    •    Jesus commands continual prayer because it flows from who God is — faithful, loving, and attentive.

We don’t persist because we think God is reluctant, but because we know He is trustworthy.

Every time we pray again, we reaffirm, “Lord, I believe You are who You say You are.”

Ask yourself: “Is my persistence rooted in desperation for an answer, or in confidence in the Answerer”?

Persistent Prayer Is Fueled by Faith, Not Feelings

Luke 18:2–5 ESV
2 He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. 3 And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4 For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.’ ”
    •    The widow had no resources, no power — but she had determination.
    •    She kept coming because she believed justice was possible, even from an unjust judge.
    •    If her belief in a corrupt judge drove persistence, how much more should our faith in a righteous God move us to keep praying?

Feelings say, “It’s not working.” Faith says, “God is working.”

Pray on your worst days just as much as your best days.

Persistent Prayer Trusts God’s Timing

Luke 18:6–8 ESV
6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. 7 And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? 8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
    •    Jesus assures that God will bring justice to His people — and He will do it at the right time.
    •    Delay does not mean denial; it means God is aligning circumstances, shaping hearts, and fulfilling His purposes.

Unwavering faith says, “God’s timing is perfect, even when it feels painfully slow.”

Replace the question “When will God answer?” with “How will I stay faithful while I wait?”

Persistent Prayer Proves Enduring Faith

Luke 18:8 ESV
8 I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
    •    Jesus ends with a challenge: “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”
    •    Persistent prayer is the faith test — will we keep believing even if we’ve prayed for years without seeing results?

True faith is not measured by how quickly prayers are answered, but by how faithfully we pray when they aren’t.

What have you stopped praying for because you lost heart? Pick it back up today as an act of faith.

Persistent prayer isn’t about wearing God down, it’s about building us up.

    •    The more we pray, the more our faith deepens; the more our faith deepens, the more we pray.
    •    Call the church to one unshakable truth: If you believe God is faithful, you will keep praying until He answers or changes your heart.

“Keep praying, because your persistence is the loudest testimony of your faith.”
