Matthew 3:13–17 NKJV

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?” 15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 4:1–11 NKJV

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” 5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ” 8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” 11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Introduction:

Today temptation is every where. Jesus shows us how to fight for those who are struggling this morning with temptation.We are seeing an amazing scene as John is speaking of Jesus he arrives.

Fulfill all righteousness: Walking in and submitting to the will of the Father.

Temptation is a common part of the human experience.

2. Temptation can be overcome.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

3. Jesus understands our struggles and temptations

Hebrews 4:15 NKJV

15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

This morning we see Jesus in both the Human and the devine.

He understands the human experience. He knows what it is like to face temptation. He has seen these temptation in the Physical , Spiritual and the Emotional Sense. He understands temptation because he has both Faced and Defeated it.

Through this Jesus shows us how to face temptation. TEMPTATION. The desire that lead us to dark places.

Jesus is announced during baptism and now there must be a season of testing! He has come to conquer

1 John 2:16 NKJV

16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 1 John 2:16 NLT

We see that Jesus is baptized to fulfill all righteousness

Satan calls tempts Jesus to yield to his flesh and rationalizing to do it.

Satan is trying to convince Jesus to yield to His flesh. He is trying to make Jesus loose focus on his assignment

A. The Lust of the Flesh

Matthew 4:3 NKJV

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Jesus has been fasting and spiritually disciplined. But his Flesh… is Hungry. What Satan says seems to the outside observer to be a rational statement. “If you can create the world from nothing, surely you can make a little bread for yourself!” Satan often gets us into a place where we start to rationalize pleasing ourselves over focusing on the father.

Power Principle: When we depend solely on rationalization and not the word of God, we fall into a trap to gratify the flesh. You cannot rationalize sin and yielding to the flesh.

Common rationalizations for for yielding to temptation

Passing the Buck: Everyone is doing it (No personal Responsibility)

Nobody’s Perfect: I have needs, God knows my heart (minimizing sin)

Blaming others: I’ve been hurt (Justifying bad behavior)

Self Pity: You don’t understand what I’ve been through. (seeking sympathy for bad choices)

Solution: Relying on the Word of God!

Matthew 4:1–11 NKJV

4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

Solution:

Feed your faith and not your flesh. Satisfy your soul and starve your sin.

Galatians 5:16 NKJV

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

B. The lust of the eyes

Matthew 4:8–9 NKJV

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

Through His example we see Jesus showing us how to ignore possession for purpose. Many people have aborted their purpose because they never have enough. They prematurely leave God opportunities in search of good opportunities.

At What cost?

Solution: Make Worship and Fidelity to God Your Aim

The Believer should make devotion to God and worship the priority.

Matthew 4:10 NKJV

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

Colossians 3:1–4 NKJV

1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

C. The pride of Life

Matthew 4:5–6 NKJV

5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

The pride of life is the need to be great at any cost. It is the pursuit of glory, knowledge, superiority. The individual becomes the focus of accomplishments rather than God. He took Jesus to a place that would get him attention. He is asking Jesus to abort his mission by bringing premature attention to himself.

Solution: Trust and leaninging on God

Proverbs 3:4–6 NKJV

4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.

Summary: Temptation is a human experience. Relying on God will give us strength. Christ is our example. He overcame and we can overcome.

When we come to our King we can come knowing he not only understands but he empathizes
