Andrew and John

Intro; When we first started looking at the four gospels and Jesus calling His first disciples, we talked about Matthew and Mark being more of a summary of the events of those callings. Those gospel accounts are also seen taking place after these men already had some interaction with Jesus before they followed Him. We find those interactions in the Gospels of Luke and John. Tonight I want us to focus on the Gospel of John and the conversation Jesus had with his first called disciples, Andrew and John.
Text; John 1:35-42
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.
36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”
37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”
39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).
40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).
42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).

Again the next day moves us to day three in a chronological order of days that John the Baptist’s had as he encountered the delegates from Jerusalem [v.19, 29].
So Andrew and John [who never mentions his name in the writing of his gospel] have been disciples of John the Baptist are now taking a growing interest in Jesus.
When John points them to Jesus, he is not only saying, “this is the One I’ve been preaching about,” but also he is saying his ministry is completed.
One of the things that a follower of Jesus needs to keep in mind is what John did, “it’s all about Jesus and not us!” We are not to take any credit or glory for what God has done!
19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

After Jesus notices Andrew and John following Him, he asked the the question that every person must answer, “what do you seek?”
Every person has a desire to know what life is all about. And everyone will ask that question of themselves at some point and time.
What are you seeking in life? People seek many different things today for the purpose of making them feel happy, secure, or satisfied. They seek love, peace, fame, money, power, prestige, security, etc. But none of those things can bring the inner peace that man is desperately searching for.
According to what a person is seeking will determine how they live life. And how a person lives life determines how they will spend eternity.
Andrew and John were seeking truth, their Messiah. They were being drawn to Jesus by the Father through the Holy Spirit for salvation.
44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Instead of answering Jesus directly, they asked “where He was staying?”
This could mean where are you living, but it also could be asking the Teacher, “we want to know more.”
When a person encounters Christ, we are challenged to examine our motives and desires in life. Following Jesus is an intentional choice that requires seeking and following Him, which leads to a transformation in our lives and a deeper understanding of His purposes.
Remember Saul on the road to Damascus, “Who are You, Lord?”, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?
Whatever a person seeks in life will determine whether they lose or preserve their life!
3. Come and See; 39-42
3. Come and See; 39-42
Andrew and John followed Jesus and stayed with Him all day no doubt discussing the kingdom of God.
I believe there is a great possibility that Jesus spoke to them about the same things He would speak to the two disciples He met on the road to Emmaus after His resurrection.
27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
Jesus explained the scriptures, book by book, showing them the things concerning Him.
Two things to consider;
Jesus believes the whole Bible is about him. Starting in Genesis going forward, the Word of God is about the Son of God! If we don’t read the Bible and see how it connects Jesus’ life, death, burial and resurrection to our need of a Savior, then we’re not understanding the Word of God. Jesus is the focus of scripture!
Our faith cannot be rooted in a personal experience only, but in the Word of God. If we don’t have a biblical faith then all we have is a religious experience. A lot of people experience a lot of different things and they are not all of God! All that Jesus expounded of Himself in the Scriptures was fulfilled by Himself. It is written for a purpose that faith is built on the Word of God and Jesus Christ as He is revealed in the Word!
37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
Tenth hour- 4 P.M. or 10 A.M., depending on whether John counted the start of a day from 6 AM or 6 PM. [Jewish and Roman days started at different times]
Regardless of what time it was [morning or evening] John wrote this time down for a specific reason. It was a life-changing encounter with Jesus that John recorded the precise time. It was the day of their salvation.
I believe with my whole being, that every born again believer must know when they got saved! Your life was changed and that should be etched in your life as the most important day of your life!
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
I believe that this was the very day that Andrew and John believed unto salvation in Jesus Christ. Why I believe this is found in verse 41.
[v.41] We have found the Messiah, Christ, the anointed One! Andrew went and told his brother “We have found the One that God has promised in His Word through Moses and the Prophets.”
[v.42] Andrew brought Simon to Jesus as proof that he believed. And Jesus confirmed Andrews salvation by the words He spoke to Simon, calling him Cephas/Peter/Stone. Jesus was simply telling Simon that his life needed to change as well.
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Close;
Jesus will never put off the sincere, Spirit-prompted seeker. But Jesus will not commit Himself to the insincere and hypocritical, no matter what their outward profession may be nor their religious affiliation.
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
