Today, we continue our series by exploring the Old Testament and all the places where the Holy Spirit appears.
We have been looking at all the places in the Old Testament where the Holy Spirit is directly referenced and what he does in people's lives.
Last week, we wrapped up the places where the Holy Spirit appears in the Old Testament's historical book.
Today, we begin looking at where the Holy Spirit appears in the books of the Old Testament, which are known as the Wisdom literature.
Today, we will examine four passages in which the Holy Spirit appears and does the same thing.
Those books are:
Old Testament Wisdom Literature: 1. Job 2. Psalms 3. Proverbs 4. Ecclesiastes 5. Songs of Solomon
And for all of you who have the study Bibles we give away…
If you look right before Job in your Bible, there are five pages of introduction to the Wisdom books.
Take some time and read that later today.
We give you these study Bibles to help you grow.

It is interesting to note that most of the time, when these books reference “spirit” they are referring most of the time to our human spirit and not the Holy Spirit.
One of the cool things we will see as we progress through these books is how they confirm what we have learned earlier in this series.
Like how the Holy Spirit was the breath of God that brought us to life (Job 33, Ps 33).
There is a very close link between God’s Spirit and our spirit.
And so let’s dive into our Bibles today…in one of those books that is not preached on a lot because it is a rather depressing book.
The book of Job.
Just curious, is there anyone here today whose favorite book of the Bible is Job?
PAUSE
If you have your Bible with you, and I hope you do, would you open it with me today to Job.

Now, as you are getting to the book of Job, let me give everyone a little background on this guy who we will be reading about today.
And again, in your Study Bible there are several pages of introduction you can read later today…
Job is a guy who is like UBER successful.
He is an EXTREMELY wealthy and successful man and father, but more importantly, he is a GODLY man.
Look at Job chapter 1 verse 1… this is how all of us should want to be described:
Job 1:1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.
Wow!
He was blameless.
Upright.
Feared God.
Shunned evil.
An all around really good moral guy!
Verse 2 gets to his wealth…
2 He had seven sons and three daughters,
Clearly a good homeschool family to have that many kids!
3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants.
He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.
Stop there…
So, he owned a LOT of animals…
So I took those animals and I put it into Chat GPT…and said how much would all that be worth today…
Here is what Chat GPT pumped out:
Sheep 7,000 ~$200 each $1,400,000 Camels 3,000 ~$5,000 each $15,000,000 Yoke of oxen (pairs) 500 pairs ~$3,000 per pair $1,500,000 Female donkeys 500 ~$1,500 each $750,000 Estimated Total — — ~$18.65 million
And that does NOT include any land value, barns, equipment, homes, and so on….
Job…was INCREDIBLY wealthy…
And Job LOVED God.
And Satan hated that Job loved God.
Job loved God so much that God even said this about Job in verse 8:
8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”
Keep that on the screen for a second…
Do you see what God said about Job?
There is NO ONE on EARTH like Job!!!
That is a BIG statement!
Job was an amazing man blessed by God in so many ways…
But…
Satan does not like people who love God.
So Satan says:
9 “Does Job fear God for nothing?” Satan replied.
10 “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has?
You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.
Stop there…
Satan proposes that the ONLY reason Job loves God is because God has blessed him.
That the ONLY reason Job follows God is because God is kind to him.
That the ONLY reason Job is so Godly, because he lives a cushy life.
So….verse 11…
11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.”
12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”
God says go for it, Satan…
You can take away anything you want from him, but do not harm him.
And the rest of this book is about that happening.
Satan strips everything from Job.
Satan destroys his life.
Destroys his family.
Destroys his reputation.
And the book has all these conversations Job has with others about this horrible turn of events in his life.
And probably the MOST frustrating part of the book is that God never answers why he allowed Job to suffer…
Just like we all do not know why God allows bad things to happen to us…
Maybe it is because Job’s suffering revealed his true character even more…
And it became even more obvious he really did love God.
PAUSE
So with that background…
Let’s look at the places where the Holy Spirit shows up and you can read the rest of the book later today.
The first place the Holy Spirit shows up is in Job 4.
And this ties to where we started…
On the breath of God, bringing life to all of us…
Job 4:9 At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more.
Which ties to what it says in:
Job 15:30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
In both those verse we learn something new about the role of the Holy Spirit.
Write this down:
The Holy Spirit can be an agent of God’s judgment.
(Repeat)
And I know there is not a person here who likes to be judged.
Everyone wants to think that they are a good person overall.
And understand…
God does tell us that we are NOT to judge other people.
That God alone is judge in life.
And God will judge our lives based on how well we live according to HIS Word…
The Bible!!!!
That is why we are a church that just teaches the Bible!
Because we want you all to learn how to live according to God’s Word.
SO that one day when you meet God you will have lived a life that aligns with HIS design!!!
PAUSE
The Holy Spirit, God’s Spirit, can breathe life into things…
The Holy Spirit can also remove the life he gives to things…
And that is further confirmed in Job 27.
Job 27:3, as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils,
Do you hear what that verse clearly says?
The key to life is the Breath of God…
The Holy Spirit in our nostrils.
That is a funny way of saying it…
Why use nostrils LOL…
Why not say lungs…
LOL!!!!
PAUSE
But the point is the same…write this down…
The Holy Spirit sustains our life.
(Repeat)
Which is why Job says in the next verse:
Job 27:4 my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies.
Keep that verse on the screen for a while….
And I know we are flying through the book of Job so let’s pause here for a second and let me elaborate on why he said this.
When you read Job later today, you will see that after the devil rips everything away from Job, he has a conversation with person after person about why his life has imploded.
And again, remember Satan’s assumption…
If Job… loses EVERYTHING.
If Job… loses ALL of his wealth.
If Job… loses his family.
If Job… loses his friends.
If Job… loses everything he holds near and dear…
And look at that verse again…
Here we are WAY into all that coming true…
Job has lost everything…
So Satan thinks he will have to:
He will hate God.
He will blame God.
He will turn away from God.
And look at that verse again…
He says nope…
I know my life is terrible.
I mean, look at what he says in verse 2….
Job 27:2, “As surely as God lives, who has denied me justice, the Almighty, who has made my life bitter,
He admits…God could have stopped this..
God did not.
God denied him justice.
God has allowed his life to become bitter.
God has allowed his life to implode…
Job knows God allowed it…
But go back to verse 3-4….listen to what Job says:
Job 27:3-4 “as long as I have life within me, the breath of God in my nostrils,
4 my lips will not say anything wicked, and my tongue will not utter lies.
He makes a choice to say, “I know God could have stopped this.
I know God could have given me justice.
I know God could have stopped this.
But God is who gave me life.
God gave me breath.
God gave me EVERYTHING I had…
And therefore….
I will not say anything wicked about God.
Or other people!!!!
And my tongue will not lie about what I know about God.
OR other people!
PAUSE
Can you imagine standing that strong if everything was stripped away from you?
Can you imagine if everything you hold near and dear was stripped away from you…
Would you stand that strong for God still?
PAUSE
That is why we need the Holy Spirit.
Because the reality is we could not do it on our own.
We need God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, to help us in good and bad times.
To help us through hard times.
Just like Job said the Holy Spirit was what helped him…
PAUSE
There is one more place where the Holy Spirit is directly reference in the book of Job.
Flip toward the end of the book.
In chapter 33, it says this.
Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Again, that confirms the same thing we read earlier…
The Holy Spirit is what gives us life.
PAUSE
Flip to the last chapter of Job…
I want to show you how this story ends…
And then we are going to go into a time of prayer for those here today who are maybe struggling with why God has allowed some bad stuff to happen in their lives…
Job 42…Job says:
Job 42:1 Then Job replied to the Lord: 2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
AKA God you are in control…
Your purpose is your purpose.
I submit to that.
Then drop down to verse 10…
Job 42:10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.
And verse 12 says…
12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part.
And verse 16…
Job 42:16-17 16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.
17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.

Church…
We do not know why God allows bad things to happen to good people.
But I know personally…
When I have gone through hard times with other people, it has revealed their true character.
Hard times reveal what we truly believe.
Hard times reveal who we really trust in.
And so…
We are going to go into an extended time of song and prayer…
And I want to encourage you…
If you are struggling…
Come up here and pray…
But before we pray, let me give you your life application today.
