What do I believe God wants us to know? False Identities must Fall and God’s identity must reign
Why? Our identity in Christ gives us love, hope, and power
What do I believe God wants us to do? Defeat the Goliaths of False Self so Life of Christ can reign
Why? We live from who believe we are
ME/WE
We are in the series Goliath Must Fall and one of the biggest GOLIATHS we all face in LIFE is the he GOLIATH of THE FALSE SELF, A FALSE IDENTITY…IDENTIES THAT ARE NOT TRUE ABOUT US BUT they are real WE CARRY THEM AS IF THEY ARE TRUE AND LIVE AS THOUGH
SOME OF THE IDENTITIES WE CARRIED AND LIVED INOTO ARE.
TOO SHORT…ATHLETICALLY, GIRLS/WOMAN ARE NOT GOING TO LIKE YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO SHORT.
DUMB/STUPID/NOT GOOD ENOUGH…TEACHER, PARENT, FRIEND, YOU ARE NOT SMART ENOUGH
SINNER….we are saint…216 times addressed
UNLOVABLE….UGLY, UNATTRACTIVE. UNLOVABLE
FAILURE
MANY OF US HAVE LIVED INTO THIS FALSE SELFS THAT ARE NOT ONLY WRONG, BUT DAMAGING BECAUSE THEY ARE HOLDING YOU BACK FROM WHO GOD WANTS YOU TO US AND FROM THE GOOD GOD WANTS TO DO THROUGH US FOR THE WORLD
- THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST PLOTS, HE DOESN’T WANT YOU JUST TO DISBELEIVE GOD, BUT HE ALSO WANTS YOU TO DISBELIEVE WHO YOUR.. BECAUSE HE IS THE FATHER OF LIES IS TO GET YOU TO BELIEVE A LIE ABOUT YOURSELF SO YOU ARE HELD BACK FROM LIFE FOR YOU AND FOR OTHERS
ONE OF THE WAYS THE ENEMY GETS YOU TO BLIEVE FALSE THINGS ABOUT YOU IS THROUGH WORDS.
Through your mom’s words, dad’s words, friends, enemies words
WHY?
LET’S REMEMBER A COUPLE OTHER THINGS ABOUT IDENTITY .
LET’S REMEMBER FROM THE SERMON ON JONAH TALKING ABOUT THE POWER OF POSITIVE WORDS THAT ARE NEGAITIVE WORDS
Proverbs 18:21 ESV
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
-here’s the deal you must know this…. FRIENDS YOU MUST KNOW THAT WORDS DON’T HAVE TO BE TRUE TO BE REAL TO US
all the lies you believe are not true but you and I believe them and walk in them.
I am stupid, why because Amaanda said I am stupid…did God say you are stupid? NO, but Amanda did.
HERE IS THE DEAL YOU NEED TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE, IN CHRIST, TO DEFEAT THE GOLIATHS of you life.
not what your mom says
not what your friends say
not what your foe says
not wha you say
- because when you don’t know who you are, you’ll become whatever someone else tells you are…your FRIENDS, FOES, AND FAMILY tells you ARE.
OR YOU WILL TRY TO FORM YOU OWN IDENTITY BECOME SOMETHING BY YOUR OWN HANDS WHAT YOU DO
RICH, HEALTHY, SUPER CHRISTIAN (NOT IN A GOOD TERM, BUT LIKE A PHARISEES
but eventually, riches fade, you body falls apart, Pharisees Christians are found out
We need to know who we are in Christ.
Loved
accepted
redeemed
anointed
Chosen before the foundation of the world.
THIS IS WHAT DAVID DOES WHEN HE FACES THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE or GROUPS of PEOPLE who are trying to get HIM to believe in a false version of who God says he is.
The first group David needs to face in the story of David and Goliath is his family…You may have been here too, maybe not all of us, prasie God if you are in that group of not being affected negatively by your family, but
not all family members but at some or one of your family members who are trying to give you an identity that is not from God.
And like most identities that come from the family there is a backstory.
What is the backstory to what David’s family thinks of him?
It is started in 1 Sam 16. when God calls Samuel to anoint a new king…Saul day as King is coming to an end.
Samuel is called to go to David’s family…the annoited is going to come through Jesse’s (David’s dad’s family).
1 Samuel 16:6–7 ESV
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
another son comes another
1 Samuel 16:10 ESV
And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”
Did Samuel not hear from God correctly???
1 Samuel 16:11–13 ESV
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
Did you see what David’s family thought about David?
When Jesse comes to anoint a son of Jesse. Jesse the dad didn’t even invite David to the potential anointing….Jesse thought there is no way it is David….
Maybe you have been there
Do you know what David cries during that time?
Psalm 27:10 ESV
For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord will take me in.
YOu didn’t think much of me, but God does.
You didnt’t think I could do much, but God does
You rejected me, but God accepted me!
This train of thought continues into chapter 17
1 Samuel 17:28–30 ESV
Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.” And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.
Eliab again is against his brother…what are you doing here??? you must leave
David writes in the Psalm this. This is who I am.
Psalm 139:13–14 ESV
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Eliab I am going to tell and show you something, not out of pride, but out of the goodness of God.
I am fearfully and wonderfully made
I have a call on my life
I am anointed king
Though you don’t see it doesn’t change the truth God has a call on my life.
One of the calls is KING
and on of the other ones is GIANT SLAYER
It is not just about me, its about you and your freedom.
Some of you need to hear this today.
It is not just about to bring you freedom but to bring freedom to others.
FIRST GROUP DAVID HAS TO DEFEAT IS HIS FAMILY
2. GROUP IS FRIENDS or FALSE FRIENDS, David faces a false friend in Saul.
What does king Saul think when he hears that David plans to fight Goliath? GREAT! SIGN HIM UP? NO
1 Samuel 17:31–33 ESV
When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him. And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”
You are too young!
David gives his resume
1 Samuel 17:34–37 ESV
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”
The Lord delivered me
Saul, God’s hand is upon me!
Friends say you cannot do ____ you say this is what God has done in my life.
3. FOES
Here is a reality we all have FOES…you will not get ride of them
1 Samuel 17:41–44 ESV
And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.”
David gives the words of God
1 Samuel 17:45–52 ESV
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.” When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron.

🔥 Application: Who Told You That?

Where are you today?
Some of us are living under names God never gave us. You've been told you're not enough. You're too young. Too broken. Too ordinary. But the question that matters most isn't: What did they say? It's: What does God say?
Just like David, we all face three voices in our lives:
Family – Those closest to us may speak from pain or limited vision. But rejection by people doesn’t mean rejection by God.
False Friends – Like Saul, even those in leadership or authority can try to place limits on you. But God’s calling on your life doesn’t require their permission.
Foes – The enemy shouts lies at you. But the real battle isn’t just physical or external—it’s spiritual and internal. And the battle belongs to the Lord.
🔑 Here’s the truth: you are not what other people say you are, you are who God says you are.
🔓 (And your) Freedom begins with identity.
You are not what they said about you.
You are not your worst moment.
You are not your success or your failure.
You are who God says you are:
Loved
Chosen
Redeemed
Called
Fearfully and wonderfully made
So here’s the challenge:
What lie have you believed about yourself that God never said?
What false identity do you need to lay down today?
What truth from God's Word do you need to pick up and speak over your life daily?
It’s time to drop the false self—and rise in the true identity God has spoken over you.
Your Goliath must fall—not just for you, but for the freedom of others.
