Me Familia Matt 12:46-50

This section of text comes at the end of the condemnation of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and the parables of the soils.
Matthew 12:46–50 “ While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.” 48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.””
As a whole Jesus isn’t dismissing family but recognizing that in Him we are an eternal family through doing will of father which is found codified in John 6:29 which we'll look at later in the message. Its short but packed with so much, so lets break it down.
Matthew 12:46 “ While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him.”
The family perhaps grows impatient/interrupts obviously he is still speaking when they come to see him..
we’ll look more in deptgh at the family in just a moment
Matthew 12:47 “ Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.””
In Mark we are told that the crowd responded, so with this, its folks in the crowed pointing out, maybe one main one?
Kinda doesn't matter except that its not one of the apostles and why give us this detail.
because its real people. This is history not myth.
How many brothers? Any sisters? Well we see in Matthew 13:54–58 “ When He had come to His own country, He taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is this not the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary? no joeseph And His brothers James (old camel knees), Joses, Simon, and Judas? 56 And His sisters, plural, more than 1 are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?” 57 So they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” 58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.”
This reminds us why Mary wasnt a virgin, she had 4 more boys and at least 2 girls. So at least 7 kids if not more. There is no indication that Joseph was much older or married previously with kids. Thats made up by orthodox to dismiss biblical arguments against the eternal virginity of Mary.
Matthew 12:48 “ But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?””
Jesus’ request or question causes them wonder what he’s “really” asking. Jesus taught in a somewhat socratic method by asking questions as much as answering.
This is asked in all 3 gospels, and is something that helps us see that its probably happened just like this.
Matthew 12:49 “ And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!”
Its not just a kumbaiya, we are all family because we like and hang out its not metaphysical, its real. There is a change in our hearts partly in response to grace, but primarily through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus told us in Matthew 10:35–39 “ For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.”
To love the FATHER, to love the SON, is our worship and glorifies Him greatly. To truly worship our Lord is to die to self and live in Him.
But what about honoring mother and father from the big 10. To Love the Lord more than anything does honor a Jewish mother/father who are following Jehovah.
But blindly obeying especially ungodly commands from a mom or dad is not required. Leaders don’t lead in the christian life like a commander, trying to control every aspect of a soldiers life. Its sacrifical, giving, and being a servant. Leading through love. Not authoritarian control
Your family is not the arbiter of truth. Jesus is quite literally, truth. Lets trust him, finally:
Matthew 12:50 “ For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.””
Do you want to part of the family of Christ? He makes a requirement here to do so.
WHOEVER Does the Will of Father.
Whats that? John 6:29 “ Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.””
TURN TO LUKE 14, Jesus makes a wild revelation in TURN TO: Luke 14:25–33 “ Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”
THATS CRAZY
Later Jesus will say in Matthew 22:34–40 “ But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.””
There is an inherit invitation in this. An invite to be part of the family. Its given over and over. Believe.
Matthew 11:28–30 “ Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”” Come into His grace.
Closing: Jesus is ridiculed by everyone, friends and family. Mark 3:21 “ But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.”” The leaders, Luke 7:33 “ .’..He has a demon.’” John 10:31 “ Then the Jews of his own hometown took up stones again to stone Him.”
But yet, He shows such grace that He would die for you, for me. Its foolishness to the world, but to to those being saved, its the power of God. This is His grace. It is a grace that we walk in! I was discussing this text with something this past week. Titus 2:11–12 “ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,” Grace changes us, cries out to us, calls us to live in Christ not in our flesh. Turn unbeliever to the One that calls you now. Repent of your sins and follow Him. For my brethren, repent, walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh. Deny the things that take you from Him.
