GUARDING YOUR TONGUE

(JAMES 3:1-13)

INTRODUCTION

THE TONGUE HAVE CAUSED MANY FRIENDSHIPS AND RELATIONSHIS TO COME TO A END. THE REASON IS BECAUSE THE TONGUE COULD NOT BE TAME. THE TONGUE HAS POWER TO SPEAK LIFE OR SPEAK DEATH AND TO HEAL OR HURT OTHERS.

UNTIL WE LEARN HOW TO THINK BEFORE WE SPEAK, WE WILL CONTINUE TO HURT OTHER’S WITH OUR WORDS.

THE TONGUE HAVE INFLUENCE

THE TONGUE IS A WORLD OF EVIL.

THE TONGUE IS UNTAMEABLE

THE TONGUE IS INCONSISTENT.

A. THE TONGUE HAVE INFLUENCE

James 3:3–4 “Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.”

THE TONGUE CAN HAVE A GREAT INFLUENCE ON A PERSON LIFE EITHER GOOD OR EVIL.

WHEN THE TONGUE IS INFLUENCE BY EVIL IT WILL USE THE TONGUE TO HAVE CONTROL OF OTHER’S LIVES. IT WILL DESTROY A PERSON LIFE, BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER MEASURE UP TO THE PERSON WHO HAS CONTROL OF THEM.

A LOOSE TONGUE IS DESTRUCTIVE AND IT WILL DESTROY OTHER’S WITH THEIR WORDS. HOW MANY OF US HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY SOMEONE ELSE WORDS. DID IT AFFECT YOU TO THE POINT THAT YOU STARTED TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY HAVE SAID ABOUT YOU, OR DID YOU RETAILIATE BACK WITH HURTING WORDS.

THIS IS WHY HURT PEOPLE, HURT OTHERS. BUT WHEN THE TONGUE IS UNDER CONTROL, IT WILL SPEAK KIND WORDS THAT ELEVATE OTHER’S THROUGH WISDOM, SO IT WILL STIR THEM IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL HOW WE USE OUR WORDS TOWARDS OTHERS, BECAUSE WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IMPACT IT CAN HAVE ON SOMEONE FUTURE.

James 1:26 “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.”

B. THE TONGUE IS A WORLD OF EVIL.

James 3:6 “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue amongst our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.”

JAMES THE BROTHER OF JESUS SAID THAT THE TONGUE HAS THE POWER TO BURN OTHER’S. IT IS SINFUL AND HAS THE POTENTIALS TO MAKE YOUR WHOLE BODY IMPURE.

THE TONGUE ALSO KNOWS HOW TO SPREAD GOSSIP THAT CAN BRING DAMAGE TO OTHER’S AND EMOTIONAL PAIN. JAMES SAID IT SETTETH ON FIRE THE COURSE OF NATURE. AND WE KNOW THAT ONCE A FIRE START IT HAS THE POTENTIALS TO SPREAD. HOW MANY OF US HAVE CAUSED DAMAGE TO OTHER’S BECAUSE WE COULD NOT KEEP OUR MOUTHS SHUT. SOME OF US WISH WE COULD HAVE TAKING IT BACK, BUT ONCE THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE, IT CAN NOT BE TAKING BACK. GOSSIP CAN DESTROY THE CHIEF OF FRIENDS. DON’T YOU KNOW THAT A EVIL TONGUE IS CONTROLED BY FORCES OF EVIL. IT HURT, DECEIVE, AND UNDERMINE OTHER’S.

Mark 7:15 “There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.”

C. THE TONGUE IS UNTAMEABLE.

James 3:8 “but the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.”

THE ONE THING WE CAN LEARN ABOUT OUR TONGUES THAT WE DO NOT HAVE THE POWER TO TAME IT. THE WORD UNRULY IMLIES THAT THE TONGUE LACKS CONTROL.

THIS COULD BE BECAUSE THE HEART IS EVIL. WHEN THE HEART IS EVIL, WHAT COMES OUT OF OUR MOUTHS IS EVIL ALSO.

A UNTAMEABLE TONGUE HAS BROUGHT MUCH DAMAGE TO FAMILIES AND RELATIONSHIPS, BECAUSE OF THE WOUNDS IT HAS CAUSED TO OTHER’S.

BUT HOW SHOULD WE DEAL WITH A TONGUE UNTAMEABLE?

THINK BEFORE YOU REACT.

SPEAK WORDS THAT ARE ENCOURAGING AND NOT HURTING.

PRAY.

Matthew 12:34 “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.”

D. THE TONGUE IS INCONSISTENT

James 3:9 “Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.”

JAMES SAYS OUR TONGUE IS INCONSISTENT, BECAUSE WITH ONE VOICE WE CAN PRAISE GOD AND IN ANOTHER VOICE WE CAN DESTROY OUR BROTHER’S AND SISTER’S. HOW CAN WE SAY WE ARE CHRISTIANS WHO ARE MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD AND CANNOT COME IN TO A AGREEMENT WITH ONE ANOTHER. THAT IS A HYPOCRITE SPIRIT THAT PRETEND TO BE SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE REALLY NOT. WE ALL NEED TO REPENT AND ASK GOD FOR HIS FORGIVESNESS. BECAUSE WE CHRISTIANS STILL WALKING AROUND WITH THINGS IN OUR HEARTS THAT WE ARE STILL HOLDING ONTO BECAUSE SOMEONE HAS HURT US. ON SUNDAY WE ARE WITH GOD , BUT THE MOMENT OUR LIVES COME IN CONTACT WITH SOME ADVERSITY, WE SEEM TO FORGET WHO GOD IS.

Matthew 26:73–74 “And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.”
