Olivet Discourse

Study in Matthew (Ideal for Church - Foundationally)
Historical Narrative, through the life and ministry of the LJC
Walked with the Disciples - through their faith journey
Gospel Lit - Through the lens of real lives
See life from a 1c Jewish perspective
Built a foundation in OT Law, Histo, Prophets
Now - Prophetic Lit.
Jesus is Bowing up His Ministry (Olivet Discourse)
-Giving His Disciples something to hold on to
When it comes to pass - it will be unmistakable
Though He is gone - He is STILL enthroned
Trust the leading of the Holy Spirit - When He says Go! - You Go in faith
At the Ascension: (On the Mount of Olives)
Acts 1:6–9 “So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.”
Where does He go from there?
To Give all Honor, Authority and Dominion to Satan for the next 2,000 years?
He Goes to the Throne!

Abomination of Desolation

What is it? - Heard me talking about it - last few weeks
Before we discuss what it is, look at the command
Before we look at the command, Read the Text
But First, Birth Pangs
False Christs
Wars and Rumors of Wars
Famines and Earthquakes
But this is not the End, This is merely Birth Pangs
It gets worse, and tribulation feeds upon itself
Gospel of the Kingdom continues to spread (b/c 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.” )
Command (When you see)
In Judea - Flee to the Mountains (#1)
Talked about what the historians said happened to those who didn’t (Josephus, Tacitus, Eusebius, others)
On the Housetop - Forget about your things
Matthew 8:22 “But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.””
Leave Like Lot - Don’t turn back
In the Field - Don’t worry about your winter clothes
Choice between necessities and your livelihood
Woe if your Pregnant or Nursing
“Woe” - Kind of like that of the Pharisees of Chapter 8, kind of not
Woe of sympathy - “You have no idea what may befall you”
Pray it is not Winter or Sabbath
Because you will be delayed in escape
Abomination of Desolation (What is it?)
Many different names across the different translations
“the abomination that causes desolation” (NIV), “the sacrilegious object that causes desecration” (NLT), and “that ‘Horrible Thing’” (CEV). The Amplified Bible adds the note that the abomination of desolation is “the appalling sacrilege that astonishes and makes desolate.”
Reason we don’t have the same reaction to it as the 1c Jew
1c Jew spent their lives submerged in the testament of God (OT)
-We do not-
But when Jesus says refers to this event - 1c Jews immediately go to Daniel
Purpose: Who exactly is the King of kings
Dan 2 - There is an eternal Divine Kingdom and King
Read
Dan 3 - King Neb builds a golden image
Boys don’t worship, thrown into the furnace
Protected, Neb worships God - Daniel 4:3 ““How great are His signs And how mighty are His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom And His dominion is from generation to generation.”
Dan 4 - Vision of a tree getting chopped down
Interp: That Tree is you
You are a mighty King, Much like a mighty tree
But your time will end - if you don’t repent and acknowledge the Most High God as the Sovereign Ruler
Within this theme of the Sovereignty of God - there is an anticipation of timeliness
Presentation of dominion, Glory and a Kingdom Dan 7
Timeliness and expectation Dan 9 - ABO of DESO
Dan 12 - when? What will come of it?
JESUS - When you see… the time has come
Eph 1-2?
