Sermon 1: The Nature of God’s Goodness
Sermon 1: The Nature of God’s Goodness
Scripture:
Psalm 34:8 “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”
Psalm 100:5 “For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.”
Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
I love You, Lord
Oh, Your mercy never failed me
All my days, I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
[Chorus]
And all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
[Verse 2]
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
And in darkest night You are close like no other
I've known You as a Father
I've known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God,
[Chorus]
And all my life You have been faithful,
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
Introduction:
Good morning! Today we start a journey through a powerful truth: God is good. But what does that really mean? Is God’s goodness just about blessings or gifts we receive? Or is it something deeper? Today, we’ll discover that God’s goodness is not just an action but His very nature—His character. And better yet, it’s an invitation for us to experience that goodness personally.
Point 1: God’s Goodness is Who He Is
When the Bible says, “The Lord is good,” it means goodness is essential to God’s character. It’s not something He switches on and off depending on circumstances. God is always good. The Bible never calls God “bad” or “mean.” Every action He takes flows from His perfect goodness. This means God is loving, just, merciful, and faithful—always.
We know that goodness describes Who God is and that it is truly part of His Character. Think of the time when we were lost in sin and truly deserved all of God’s wrath, yet because of God’s love and Goodness to us, we were not consumed by His wrath! His Goodness to mankind causes Him to delay wrath because it is Who God is!
Illustration:
Think of God’s goodness like a pure river that never runs dry. It’s always flowing, always refreshing, and available. No matter what you face, God’s goodness is there.
Point 2: We Are Invited to “Taste and See” God’s Goodness
Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” Just like tasting food lets us know if it’s good, we are invited to experience God’s goodness personally. You can’t fully understand it with your mind only—you have to experience it in your life.
This is also something that no-one can do for you. Even if someone else says that something tastes amazing, they'll never know unless they taste it for themselves. You have to make that personal decision and the Bible tells us that now is the day of salvation, now is the time to taste and see for yourself and I promise you, if you truly taste then you will not be sorry and will not want anything else! God is The Only One Who can truly satisfy!

Application:
Have you tasted God’s goodness? Maybe through answered prayers, peace in the storm, or a sense of hope. If not, today is an invitation to open your heart and experience God’s goodness for yourself.
Point 3: God’s Goodness Brings Refuge and Blessing
The psalm also says, “Blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” God’s goodness isn’t just a feeling—it’s a safe place. When life gets tough, God’s goodness is our shelter and strength.
I know that we all have faced some very strong discouragement and opposition in our lives, yet God is still good! Life may not look that great, but we know that His track record is an incredible record and we can know that He is a Good God! We can take and FIND refuge in Him! He IS our shelter, refuge and hiding place! He will hide His children in the cleft of His hand and cover you as a hen covers her chicks and protects them from the elements!
Story:
David, the psalmist, faced many dangers but he always ran to God’s goodness for protection. We can do the same.
Conclusion & Invitation:
God’s goodness is eternal, personal, and powerful. It is who He is, and it is available to you today. If you haven’t experienced it, open your heart and trust God’s goodness now.
Closing Prayer:
“Lord, thank You for Your perfect goodness. Help us to taste and see Your goodness every day. Help us to understand and remember that Goodness is in Your character and is Who You are; a Good God! Be our refuge and strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
