The Command
The Command
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to keep all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Jesus has given the church 2 ordinances
Confessing the Faith: The 1689 Baptist Confession for the 21st Century XXVIII. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper
28:1 Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances of positive and sovereign institution. They are appointed by the Lord Jesus the only lawgiver and are to be continued in His church to the end of the age
these are instructions that we are to obey
today Terry James will follow the Lord Jesus in his instructions
let’s look at what baptism is BUT first lets look at
Baptism What it’s Not
Baptism What it’s Not
When we are saved the Holy Spirit changes us
turns our heart of stone to a heart of flesh
we then realize our need of a savior
our heart repents of our sin
and turns to Jesus by faith to save us
this is called regeneration / or Born again
I say this because there is a belief out there that says that to be saved you must be baptized
this is referred to as baptismal regeneration
to be born again you must be baptized
this theological belief has been popularized by the duck commander family and tv show Robertsons
Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men, brothers, what should we do?”
And Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
“For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
V 37 pierced to the heart is the Regenerating power of the Holy spirit
V 38 they were called to repent
Then they were told to be baptized
we look at a famous example of someone who was not baptized the thief on the cross
there was no opportunity for him to be baptized but Jesus told him today you will be with me in paradise
another is the Ethiopian eunuch
Acts 8 26-39
So what do baptists believe that baptism is?
What Is Baptism
What Is Baptism
Is Immersion
Baptizo to dip immerse to make whelmed, fully wet
baptism is symbolism it is also an association with Jesus
His death burial and resurrection
Or do you not know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
when we are baptized we go through a vivid reenactment of what Jesus went through for you
when we we were saved we came to a realization of our sinful condition
and we find ourselves guilty of sin against God
And you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience,
among whom we all also formerly conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
our only hope for forgiveness is a right standing before God
and that is repentance and faith the death burial and resurrection of Jesus
to bring us from death unto life
the water that surrounds us symbolizes death
the wages of sin is death
and we died with christ as our verse says
and as we come out of the water it is symbolize as a new creation
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
alive from the dead
we walk in newness of life
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
we now have taken of the beggars rags and Jesus has clothed us in robes of righteousness
there was a time when the church did this literally at baptism
the person would go naked into the water and be baptized
symbolizing being born again in his birthday suit
and as the person comes out of the water a robe is put on him symbolizing the robe of righteousness
as they are born into the family of God . and become a member of the church
then the church has a communion service with the new member of the family
our challenge is now is to
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
the baptism symbolizes what has happened to us but after we must conduct our lives as the new creatures that we are
we are dead to the sin that used to control us
we need to live our lives representing the person that we are a new creation
we need to live our lives like the children of God that we are
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to Sheol.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Universal church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
