Key Text: Ephesians 5:15-17 (NLT)
Ephesians 5:15-17 NLT
“So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”
INTRODUCTION — “Defining Temptation”
Background & Definition
Temptation: a desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise.
From the very definition, we see the danger: temptation pulls us toward the unwise, which Scripture warns us against in Ephesians 5:15–17.
Clarity
Temptation itself is not sin. The sin is what happens when temptation leads to disobedience. But here’s the catch—sin is fun… at least for a season (Hebrews 11:25). If you choose to dwell in an environment of temptation, your sin nature will eventually drag you across the line.
Illustration
It’s like the boy who loved his neighbor’s sandbox. It was loaded with cool toys—but there was one rule: the neighbor always won. Tired of losing, he built his own sandbox with even better toys. His sandbox, his rules—he won every time.
The enemy’s “sandbox” may look appealing, but his rules guarantee that you lose every time.
Transition
The good news? God has given us three weapons to overcome temptation—Faith, Hope, and Love.
Point 1 — Faith: Trust God’s Escape Plan
Explanation:
1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT)
“The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful.
He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand.
When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.”
God never promised we wouldn’t face heavy loads—He promised we’d never face temptation without an exit door. That’s not taunting; that’s empowerment!
Application
Strengthen your faith by hearing the Word. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” If your faith feels weak, it’s a sign you need to feast more on His voice than on the noise of temptation.
Illustration
Faith is like a parachute—you don’t wait until you’re plummeting to the ground to check if it works. You train, prepare, and trust it before the freefall.
Point 2 — Hope: Remember God’s Past Faithfulness
Explanation:
Revelation 12:11 tells us we overcome “by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.” Our testimony is living proof of God’s past provision, and just like the Ark of the Covenant (also called the Ark of the Testimony), it reminds us that if He did it before, He can do it again.
Application:
When temptation whispers, “God won’t come through,” let your testimony shout, “Yes He will!” Keep a written record of His faithfulness so you can pull it out when the battle heats up.
Illustration:
Hope is like a lighthouse—it doesn’t stop the storm, but it tells you where safety is. Every time you recall what God has done, that light gets brighter in the darkness.
Point 3 — Love: Choose What You Cherish Most
Explanation
John 1 says, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”—Jesus Himself.
Loving Him means treasuring Him above anything temptation offers. Every time you face temptation, ask: “Do I love this more than Him?”
Ephesians 5:25–27 describes Jesus washing His bride clean “through the word.” Love for the Word cleanses us, fuels our faith, and renews our hope.
Application
Loving God more than your sin means making space for Him daily—reading, worshipping, praying—so that your affections are already full before temptation comes knocking.
Illustration
Love is like a diet: the more you fill up on what’s good, the less room you have for what’s junk. Fill your life with the Bread of Life, and you won’t crave the crumbs of sin.
Bringing It Together:
The Three Temptations & the Three Nails
1 John 2:16 outlines three types of temptation:
Lust of the flesh (FAITH – trust God will meet your needs)
Lust of the eyes (HOPE – believe God has better beyond what you can see)
Pride of life (LOVE – choose God over self)
Matthew 4:1–11 shows Jesus defeating each one in the wilderness—through the Word and the power of the Holy Spirit.
And here’s the beautiful picture:
“I took three nails in My hands and feet—one for each temptation type. And for the times I knew you’d give in, I shed My blood. I did that before you ever sinned or were even born.”
Conclusion & Object Lesson Ideas:
Sandbox & toys — to show “playing in the wrong place means losing every time.”
Parachute or backpack — to illustrate preparation of faith before the fall.
Lighthouse picture or model — to represent hope guiding us through temptation.
CLOSING
Church—hear me! You don’t have to lose in the enemy’s sandbox. You’ve got faith that fuels your fight, hope that lights your horizon, and love that locks your loyalty on the Lord!
Faith says, “God’s got an exit plan!” Hope says, “God’s done it before—He’ll do it again!” Love says, “I choose Him over everything else!”
So stand strong, step forward, and shut down the lies of the devil. You are armed, anointed, and appointed for victory. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you! And with every temptation that comes your way, you can point to the cross and declare, “Three nails already won this battle!”
Now—walk out those doors not just surviving temptation… but stomping on it!
