“To evangelize” is to proclaim the good news of the victory of God’s salvation.

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life Evangelism Is Expected

If we want to define it simply, we could say that New Testament evangelism is communicating the gospel. Anyone who faithfully relates the essential elements of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ is evangelizing. This is true whether your words are spoken, written, or recorded, and whether they are delivered to one person or to a crowd.

Evangelism Is Expected

Matthew 28:19–20 ESV

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Mark 16:15 ESV

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.

John 20:21 ESV

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

Evangelism is not only expected, it is empowered!

Acts 1:8 ESV

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life Evangelism Is Empowered

So if God by His Spirit has changed your life, be confident of this: God has given you Acts 1:8 power. That means that in ways and methods compatible with your personality, temperament, spiritual gift, opportunities, etc., you do have the power to share the gospel with people.

Many Christians are afraid to evangelize because they don’t know how to communicate the gospel succinctly.

A Simple Message

“Jesus came to live among sinners, He died in the place of sinners, He resurrected from the dead, He proved himself alive to over 500 witnesses, He ascended into heaven, and He promised he would return again one day to resurrect the dead and judge the world according to this good news! Anyone who forsakes their sin and believes this message will be saved from the penalty of sin.”

Simple Strategies

Pray that God would enable you to love people like he does

Be kind to everyone you meet (even when they don’t deserve it)

Learn to care for people in order to build trust

Take every opportunity God gives you
