This is an interesting question.
After they were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to kill him.” So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and escaped to Egypt. He stayed there until Herod’s death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called my Son.
When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.
After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, because those who intended to kill the child are dead.” So he got up, took the child and his mother, and entered the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee. Then he went and settled in a town called Nazareth to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.
SO How long did Jesus live in Egypt?
SO How long did Jesus live in Egypt?
2-3 Years is the traditional thought.
Based on words used to describe the age of Jesus - Child
when we know Herod died.
A LOT is Not known of Jesus’ childhood.
A LOT is Not known of Jesus’ childhood.
As a matter of fact, we don’t know much for what we call the “silent years”, typically given between approx age 12-30!
BUT, we do know enough!
BUT, we do know enough!
Every year his parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. When he was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the festival. After those days were over, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming he was in the traveling party, they went a day’s journey. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days, they found him in the temple sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all those who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
“Why were you searching for me?” he asked them. “Didn’t you know that it was necessary for me to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he said to them.
Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.
SO Jesus clearly knew who HE was, at least in some degree.
Which brings us to a BIG question:
HOW?
Which really brings us to the reality of this question. Because, as I said previously: there is often a bigger question behind the question.
SO did Jesus study in Egypt is actually:
Was Jesus taught while He was in Egypt, and if so by whom?
Which basically is this:
Did Joseph do his job as a father?
Because Jesus was a young child while in Egypt. There is no Scripture that would point to any idea that Jesus went to Egypt any other time.
What was Joseph’s duty as a father?
What was Joseph’s duty as a father?
“Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.
Oh and it is so important, that it gets repeated!
“Imprint these words of mine on your hearts and minds, bind them as a sign on your hands, and let them be a symbol on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
And reminded about!
He established a testimony in Jacob
and set up a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach to their children
What is OUR duty as Father’s, or parents?
What is OUR duty as Father’s, or parents?
Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
YOU have an obligation.
Start a youth out on his way;
even when he grows old he will not depart from it.
YOU are to model a godly life!
You are responsible for your children’s education in the Lord.
Which means:
You need to ensure that they are being taught the truths of the Scripture in entirety.
You need to ensure that those whom are teaching your children are QUALIFIED to teach your children.
I can go ON AND ON!
The question is: ARE YOU doing your job? Or are you slacking because it is easy?
Listen:
Satan does not have to drag you or your children to hell; he just has to distract you from heaven.
It can be easier to do a lot of things. But that does not mean it is right!
SO what is our obligation as the Body of Christ, the church?
SO what is our obligation as the Body of Christ, the church?
It is not to make church FUN.
It is NOT to be entertaining.
Church is NOT supposed to be 15 minutes of a rushed lesson but lots of social time.
We SHOULD be learning God’s Word in a relevant and memorable way.
We should be learning God’s Word and modeling Godly behavior.
We should be a place where people come and expect it to be different from some standard after school program.
SO, maybe what we do is boring sometimes. We are a smaller church. We need people.
We are learning, and making adjustments.
I really like our current curriculum. It is GREAT! Deep learning.
BUT, we are making changes. A BIG ONE.
