The Classroom of Stillness

Remember study hall? For some of us, it was a gift—a time to catch up. For others, it felt like a punishment—a forced quiet you couldn’t escape. But here’s the thing: the purpose of study hall was simple. It was to help you focus on what really mattered.
In Luke 10, we meet Mary and Martha. One is busy preparing, moving, working. The other is sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening. And Jesus tells us which one made the better choice.
This is God’s invitation to us: to slow down, sit still, and learn to listen.

Context: Why This Matters

Mary’s posture wasn’t laziness—it was intentional discipleship. Martha’s frustration wasn’t unusual—she was doing what culture expected. But Jesus flips the expectation: it’s not about doing more for Him. It’s about being with Him.
We live in a world that confuses busyness with holiness. We assume that the more we do, the closer we are to God. But Jesus reminds us: sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is be still and listen.

Point 1: Listening Is an Act of Worship

Listening is an act of worship.
Story: A young pastor once said the hardest part of prayer for him wasn’t talking—it was being silent. But over time, he realized that silence was where God spoke most clearly.
Mary models this. She isn’t just sitting—she’s receiving. In a culture that measures worth by productivity, Jesus honors presence over performance.
Application: Carve out daily moments to be quiet before God. Read Scripture slowly. Pray without rushing. Sit with Him without an agenda.

Point 2: Busyness Isn’t Holiness

Busyness isn’t holiness.
Story: A woman once shared that she served in every church ministry but still felt empty. Why? Because she was doing a lot for Jesus but spending no time with Him.
Like Martha, we often let serving replace sitting. We fill our schedules with good things while neglecting the best thing: intimacy with Jesus.
Application: Identify one area where busyness is crowding out your time with God. Make space for Him this week.

Point 3: Choose the Better Portion

Jesus said Mary chose the better portion—and it wouldn’t be taken from her.
Story: Think about a great meal. You savor it. You take your time. That’s how Mary treated the words of Jesus.
Choosing the better portion means prioritizing what lasts. The dishes could wait. The work would still be there. But the chance to sit with Jesus? That moment was eternal.
Application: Guard your devotional time like a non-negotiable appointment. Give God your undivided attention.

Bringing It Together: Study Hall with Jesus

Study hall isn’t wasted time—it’s preparation. When we pause to listen, we are equipped for life’s tests. When we choose presence over performance, we choose what matters most.

Closing Challenge: Your Assignment

This week, schedule a daily 'study hall' with Jesus. Make it consistent. Make it sacred. Ask Him: 'What are You saying to me today?' And then listen.
Choose the better portion. Choose to listen.
