Many people have their own thoughts about Jesus and we’ve made thinking about Jesus a personal preference thing. In reality, we don’t define Jesus, we have to rightfully identify Him. This message challenges us to rightfully recognize Jesus in our lives.

Introduction

Matthew 16:13–20 ESV
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

1) Jesus is Rumored (v. 13-14)

Matthew 16:13–14 ESV
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Everyone has heard about this Jesus.
There are lots of rumors floating around about who He is.
John the Baptist (The newest prophet on the scene…also beheaded by this time)
Elijah (Not the Messiah, but the precursor)
Jeremiah or one of the Prophets (someone of God but not necessarily the Sent One of God).
Most today have heard of Jesus and have their own opinion of who He is.

2) Jesus is the Real Deal (v.15-17)

Matthew 16:15–17 ESV
15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
Jesus isn’t just one who makes a buzz, He’s the Real deal!
He is the Christ (Messiah), the Son of the Living God.
Simon recognizes the divinity of Jesus, even if he doesn’t fully comprehend it.
As the conversation progresses, Simon Peter is chastised and told “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
While you and I may not fully comprehend what it means to recognize Jesus is the Messiah and One worthy of all our attention and adoration, we must still be in a place we are building on the foundations of this amazing truth!
When you look at the life of Jesus and claims that Jesus makes C.S. Lewis rightfully draws the conclusion that you can only genuinely think of Jesus in one of 3 ways:
1) Lunatic
2) Liar
3) LORD
The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus screams to us that He is the real deal!

3) Jesus is Revolutionary (v.18-20)

Matthew 16:18–20 ESV
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
Jesus changes Simon’s name to Peter.
Simon means “He has heard,” referring to God’s hearing of praises and prayers.
Upon Simon’s declaration Jesus establishes a new identity in Him…Peter (Petros).
Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the Living God is the foundation of why we gather.
When Peter’s confession becomes your confession, Jesus establishes a new foundation for your life as well!
When you place your faith and trust in Jesus and confess Him as Lord, you gain access to the Kingdom of Heaven…not waiting until you pass from this life, but here and now!
Jesus changes you! He transforms you! He gives you new life and makes you a new creation!
He gives you the power to bring the authority of heaven to earth over your own life and declare His kingdom authority boldly as you invite others into the Kingdom through Jesus!
