1. Lifting Hands as a Prayer Posture in the OT
1. Lifting Hands as a Prayer Posture in the OT
Psalm 63:4
Psalm 63:4
“Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.”
Lifting hands is an expression of praise and dependence on God.
Psalm 141:2
Psalm 141:2
“Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.”
Prayer and lifted hands are likened to an offering — symbolic of worship offered in holiness.
Lamentations 3:41
Lamentations 3:41
“Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.”
The gesture is paired with lifting the heart, showing it’s an outward sign of inward devotion.
2. Holy Hands = Clean Hands
2. Holy Hands = Clean Hands
Psalm 24:3–4
Psalm 24:3–4
“Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? … He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart…”
Clean hands symbolize innocence in action — not guilty of wrongdoing.
Isaiah 1:15–16
Isaiah 1:15–16
“…when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you… your hands are full of blood. Wash you, make you clean…”
God refuses prayer from hands stained with sin — repentance is needed first.
3. Without Wrath = Peace Toward Others in Prayer
3. Without Wrath = Peace Toward Others in Prayer
Psalm 66:18
Psalm 66:18
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”
Resentment or unforgiveness breaks fellowship with God in prayer.
Proverbs 15:29
Proverbs 15:29
“The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.”
Job 42:10
Job 42:10
“And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends…”
Intercession for others is linked to restored blessing — opposite of harboring anger.
4. Without Doubting = Faith Toward God
4. Without Doubting = Faith Toward God
While the Hebrew Bible doesn’t use the exact Greek διαλογισμός (“doubting”), the concept appears:
Psalm 78:19–22
Psalm 78:19–22
“Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? … Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation.”
Doubt and distrust provoked God’s anger and hindered His blessing.
Isaiah 7:9
Isaiah 7:9
“If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.”
Faith is essential to receive from God.
