James 4:10 ESV
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Main Point: All men should humble themselves as we continue to draw near to the Holy King.

Immediate context: Already knowing sin and are sorrowful towards sin (James 4:9)

Pharisee & Tax Collector (Luke 18:10-14)

Pharisee
Showboating — “standing…prayed”
Compared his perceived “holiness” against perceived “sinfulness”
Raised his own brand of righteousness and good deeds
Tax Collector
Far off from the temple
Lowered his view of himself in view of God in “heaven”
Lamented his own sinfulness
Yearned God’s intervention of his sinfulness

HUMBLE yourselves — tapeinoo

aorist — already happened before
passive — is being done from the outside
imperative — command

other instances of “humble”

humble as socioeconomic status (James 2:2 “For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in,” )
humble as those who are broken down by God’s judgment (Isaiah 2:11 “The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.” )

same instance of “humble”

James 1:9 “Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation,”
James 1:21 “Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”

usage of humble

as we are coming to God the King (James 4:8)
as a past realization from God that put us in a humble state — positional context giving meaning to how this humbling command is enacted “before the Lord”

Promise — “he will exalt you”

this is a fact! a sure promise!
raise us up from our lower state — being in His presence, the Utmost
in contrast to the Pharisaical attitude of some teachers who only mean to raise oneself to exalt themselves — God only would exalt those who are lowly

Gleanings

Look towards Him how humbles us and exalt Him in worship — only when we continually know who God is are we humbled (1 Pet 5:6)
Look towards His exaltation of us not in terms of getting us over our troubles but is that blessed dwelling before His presence (Ps. 73:28)

Reflect!

What happens when we come before God in His Word? Are we humbled or have we relegated knowledge of Him to academia?
