Finding Faith in the Midst of

Imagine a surfer who knows the ocean well, trusting their experience and training to ride the waves. Even with their skill, storms sometimes brew, and waves can become overwhelming. Yet, the surfer doesn’t stop surfing; instead, they adapt, trusting their knowledge and navigating the stormy waters. Just as the surfer remains steadfast amid changing tides, we too can trust and obey Jesus, knowing that storms may come but His guidance will see us through.
Life can throw unexpected storms your way—loss of a job, health issues, or discord with your spouse. In these moments, trusting Jesus might feel daunting, but you can start by creating a family prayer corner. Designate a space where your family gathers to pray together for strength and guidance. This practice will help you support each other through life's storms while deepening your trust and reliance on God as you share your worries and seek His will together.

the Storm

Bible Passage: John 6:16–21

Summary: In John 6:16-21, the narrative portrays the disciples battling a stormy sea without Jesus. Despite their fears and the turmoil around them, this passage highlights a key moment where Jesus, in His miraculous power, appears walking on the water, reassures them, and calms their anxiety. It reflects the duality of our existence as believers: encountering life's storms and recognizing Jesus's presence as a source of hope and strength.
Application: This passage illustrates the importance of recognizing Jesus in our moments of doubt and fear. It encourages Christians to maintain their focus on Christ during life's adversities, ultimately leading to growth in faith and assurance of His constant support even when storms arise.
Teaching: The sermon teaches that uncertainty and fear are part of the Christian journey, reinforcing the need to trust in Jesus's authority over our life's challenges. It emphasizes learning to recognize Him amidst our trials and understanding that our faith is often tested but strengthened in the process.
How this passage could point to Christ: This passage foreshadows Jesus's ultimate control over storm and chaos, symbolizing His power and divinity. It points to Jesus as the embodiment of God's presence in our trials; He is not distant from our struggles but actively engages with us in them, leading us toward His ultimate victory over the chaos of sin and death.
Big Idea: In our most turbulent times, embracing faith in Jesus transforms our fear into confidence as He guides us through to calmer waters.
Recommended Study: To enrich your sermon preparation, consider diving into the historical context of the Sea of Galilee and its significance in Jewish culture using your Logos library. Investigate texts surrounding the theme of fear versus faith in the Gospels, particularly how other biblical figures interacted with overwhelming circumstances. Additionally, look for commentaries that explore the theological implications of Jesus’s assurance to the disciples, emphasizing the concept of His presence in our trials.

1. Setting Off Without Sight

John 6:16-17
You could start by focusing on the disciples embarking on their journey without Jesus, symbolizing moments in our life when we venture out feeling alone and overwhelmed. Perhaps emphasize that even when we feel distant from Christ, He is aware of our situation. The missing presence of Jesus in the beginning of the journey points to our tendency to forget His promises amidst life's uncertainties, encouraging the congregation to seek His presence actively.

2. Storms Challenge Our Security

John 6:18-19
Perhaps examine how the disciples face strong winds and rough waters, illustrating life's unavoidable trials. Emphasize the fear and panic the disciples felt, as we often do when situations seem beyond our control. This storm can be seen as a metaphor for the challenges believers face, prompting them to remember that these are opportunities for Jesus to demonstrate His power and care. It suggests that believers should keep an eye out for Jesus's presence even in chaos.

3. Seeing Jesus Secures Peace

John 6:20-21
You could explore Jesus's words "It is I; do not be afraid," as an assurance of His divine presence and authority. Maybe connect this to the overall message that Jesus's presence dispels fear and brings peace. Delve into how recognizing and welcoming Jesus into our 'boats' can transform our perspective and bring about a miraculous sense of calm and assurance, just as it did for the disciples. This is an invitation to trust in His mastery over life's troubles.
