Colossians 3:1-4
Colossians 3:1-4
Colossians 3:1–4 “1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
V:1- If then you were raised with Christ
Since Then
Paul is establishing the identity of His audience
Those that have submitted and surrendered to Christ
And are walking in Newness of Life with Him
I would believe this is many if not most of here tonight
We have seen firsthand…
Ephesians 2:4–5 “4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),”
Romans 5:8 “8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
While we were living live in complete opposition to God He demonstrated his love to us
That is the identity of the audience that He is speaking to
Since Our Identity is in Christ
Colossians 3:1–2 , seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.”
seek those things which are above
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Seek and Set your Mind:
Seek: Actively Pursue; to Look for with Intentionality
Set your Mind: to fix your attention to; to put your whole focus on
Where is our Pursuit?
What is our attention on?
To give better clarity of what this looks like…
Meeting, Seeking, and Pursuing Juliana…looked for her…is she in the room?
The Idea of Having our thoughts and actions consumed by a certain thing…
Unhealthy pursuit of a guy or girl
Thought of Starting school or new job soon
The Desire for acceptance
A worry that is weighing you down…
Jesus’ Perscription:
Matthew 6:24 “24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
Can’t serve two masters
Can’t have your focus on two things
You can have two bosses that have 100% different direction for your life
Matthew 6:25–34 “25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need…”
Don’t Worry about the things of this life…
They should not be what you are Seeking and seting your mind on.
Seek and Set your mind on the Lord and living Righteously
…Draw to a close
Colossians 3:3–4 “3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God
For you died- —-> V:1- Since you were Raised in Christ
Things that are alive, can’t be revived
Dead things need Revival
Galatians 2:20 “20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”
We often try to hold on control of our lives…but we are called to put the old man to death…
Jesus said- If you are mine, die to self and find life in me
Matthew 16:24–26 “24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”
There is Everlasting Hope In Death
Colossians 3:4 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”
He is our LIFE
Eternallly- (John 3:16) )- Because of His agape love displayed on the Cross at Calvary we have hope of eternal life in HIM.
Earthly-
Jeremiah 17:7–8 “7 “Blessed (Happy)is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”
Our Hope IS GREAT when are Trust is in Him
Romans 15:13
What are your eyes and Mind seeking and fixed on
Replace your focus from temporary to eternal
Sway Scrolling for Scripture
Replace worry with Worship
Remember your Hope and Future is in Him
