There are few, if any, questions that are as pivotal to our life as answering “who is Jesus?”
In order to navigate through the life of Jesus, we need to have a full picture of who He is.
Thus, there are few passages that give so clear a picture as John 1. We are going to examine a few pieces of this chapter that give us a glimpse into who Jesus really is.
V. 1-2: The Word is Eternal God
Jesus is the eternal Word of God who has always existed.
In order to clearly communicate this idea, John makes his readers reflect back on Genesis 1.
V. 3: Jesus is the Creator
Jesus is clearly displayed as the one who God made everything through.
When you think about one of the primary actions of God, you think about Him making everything, and this is exactly why John makes it clear to us that Jesus is the creator.
V. 4-5 & 9: Jesus is the Life and Light
We see these themes of light and life all throughout the gospel of John.
The Life builds off the idea that Jesus is the creator, so all life originates from Him but it also goes deeper.
Jesus being the life refers to the fact that a renewed spiritual life comes through Him.
He is the one who has come to take spiritually dead men, and make a way for them to be born again.
Jesus is the way we are made alive, and make those who would receive Him children of God (John 1:12-13).
The Light generally refers to two things: Biblical Truth & Holiness/ Purity
Jesus in His coming revealed the full picture of who God is (John 1:18), and He has made a way for His people to be Holy in sight, along with making it clear how His people ought to live.
So, who is Jesus? He is God who has come to make Himself known. God has came down to know us, but how did He do this?
V. 14: The Word became Flesh
Jesus came born of a virgin, to life a perfect life, a completely human life, and to die in the place of sinners so that we could receive grace from God.
He is, and will always be Truly God, and Truly Man, and He is completely worthy of our devotion.
Discussion Questions:
Which one of the names/ titles that John uses to describe Jesus stood out the most? Why?
Why do you think John goes through so much work to describe who Jesus really is before He begins speaking about His life and teaching?
How is it comforting to know that Jesus really lived as a man, and knows the struggles we endure?
