(4) Doctrinal Declaration: THE PERSON & WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

We believe that the Holy Spirit:
Is the third person of the Trinity (John 14:16–17). He convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment (John 16:8–11) . He is the active Agent in regeneration (Romans 8:9–16). He baptizes all believers into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). He indwells and seals them unto the day of redemption (Ephesians 1:13–14)
Is the Divine Teacher who, through His Word (1 John 2:20; 1 John 2:27), guides believers into all truth (John 16:13), sanctifying (2 Thessalonians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2), instructing and empowering them for service (John 14:25–26; Acts 1:8)

Rule B06

Believers should engage in frequent spiritual conversations for edification, according to the measure of their gifts.
Malachi 3:16 “Then those who feared Yahweh spoke to one another, and Yahweh gave heed and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear Yahweh and who think upon His name.”
Job 2:11 “Then Job’s three friends heard of all this calamity that had come upon him. So they came each one from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to console him and comfort him.”
Ephesians 4:29 “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for building up what is needed, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”
Colossians 4:6 “Let your words always be with grace, seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should answer each person.”
Ephesians 5:4 “nor filthiness and foolish talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore, comfort one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.”
Hebrews 3:13 “But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
Jude 20 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,”
Hebrews 10:24–25 “And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”
Acts 18:26 “and he began to speak out boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.”
1 Corinthians 12:7 “But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for what is profitable.”
Explanation B06
That men who are not solemnly called and set apart to the office of public ministry might yet possess useful gifts for teaching was mentioned before. That a church should not make use of such gifts in an orderly way, according to the rule and custom of the church, would be to hide a talent given to be used and profited from. It is obvious that every person should make every effort to contribute and add to the culture and knowledge of his or her family. But it is just as obvious that we should labour to do so in the church also, the family of God.
The Scriptures given above show this; particularly with respect to the gifts of pray, exhortation, instruction from the Word and encouragement. The fulfilling of this duty of mutual edification is an obligation upon believers.
1. Ordinarily, Ephesians 4.29; Ephesians 5.3-4, Hebrews 3.13. Believers, in their ordinary daily discourse, ought to be continually mentioning the Lord in helpful, profitable conversation, and not waste their opportunities with foolish, light, frothy words that are out of place.
2. Occasionally, Luke 24.14; Malachi 3.16. If providentially some circumstance of importance and relevance to the church should arise, a proper discussion of it amongst believers, for their own spiritual good is necessary.
3. By a special meeting appointed for prayer and instruction from the Word, Acts 10.24; Acts 12.12; Job 2.11; Ephesians 5.19; James 5.16; Jude 20; 1 Thessalonians 5.14. This would be an additional church, specially called for increasing of knowledge, love, experience, and the improving of the gifts of the church, with everyone contributing to the building of the tabernacle.
Let all useless talk be put away then. The time is short and the days are evil. Let us be convicted that we have neglected so many previous opportunities of growing in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and of doing good to one another. Let the rest of our few and evil days be spent in living for Him who died for us. Be not conformed to this world, or to the people of this world.
Questions for consideration/discussion B06
1. Does John Owen mean that there is to be no ‘small talk’ between Christians?
2.  What are the motives that keep us from the kind of spiritual conversation that he is describing?
3. How might these obstacles be overcome?
