Proverbs 7
Proverbs 7
By seeking friendship with the world, they are, in effect, committing spiritual adultery.
Douglas J. Moo
I want to create somewhat of a presupposition here. As we have seen the Father & Mother are spiritual representation of the Love and Guidance of God even in the giving of the Law. I really do think that since the spiritual adultery that God accuses Israel and us of, when we go there in our hearts, is something that is no doubt represented here. Jeremiah 3:6–9 “ The Lord said also to me in the days of Josiah the king: “Have you seen what backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there played the harlot. 7 And I said, after she had done all these things, ‘Return to Me.’ But she did not return. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. 8 Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also. 9 So it came to pass, through her casual harlotry, that she defiled the land and committed adultery with stones and trees.”
At the same time, here in Chapter 7, the Father reveals the subtle nature of temptation, and the insidious plots of an enemy that has been around us since creation. The enemy and our flesh!
Proverbs 7:1–5 “ My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. 2 Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. 3 Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin, 5 That they may keep you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words.”
He shows what happens when we walk outside of His commands to say sister is to be more in love with Word (Wisdom) than the things of the flesh.
Proverbs 7:6–9 “ For at the window of my house I looked through my lattice, 7 And saw among the simple, I perceived among the youths, A young man devoid of understanding, 8 Passing along the street near her corner; And he took the path to her house 9 In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night.”
Walking in the spirit vs walking in the flesh. There is a difference. If you weren’t “walking” here this wouldn't have happened! Johnny Cash sang, “Soon as God make black and white, whats done in the dark will be brought to the light…” God’ll Cut You Down
Proverbs 7:10–12 “ And there a woman met him, With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. 11 She was loud and rebellious, Her feet would not stay at home. 12 At times she was outside, at times in the open square, Lurking at every corner.”
That wicked anti-wisdom rears its head 1 Timothy 5:13 “ And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not.”
How we should live Titus 2:1–8 “ But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. 6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.”
Proverbs 7:13–20 “ So she caught him and kissed him; With an impudent face she said to him: 14 “I have peace offerings with me; Today I have paid my vows. 15 So I came out to meet you, Diligently to seek your face, And I have found you. 16 I have spread my bed with tapestry, Colored coverings of Egyptian linen. 17 I have perfumed my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with love. 19 For my husband is not at home; He has gone on a long journey; 20 He has taken a bag of money with him, And will come home on the appointed day.””
I’m a very moral, very nice cheater. I made it right with God then got ready to get not right. Thats not worshipping God, its worshipping the flesh, like we some folks do confession before and after they sin. Just to cover bases. Thats not grace.
NLT: Titus 2:11–14 “ For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. 12 And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, 13 while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. 14 He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.”
Proverbs 7:21–23 “ With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, With her flattering lips she seduced him. 22 Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, 23 Till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He did not know it would cost his life.” arranging own funeral
Proverbs 7:24–27 “ Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: 25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; 26 For she has cast down many wounded, i’m so lonely, tired, abused, abandoned, etc to justify sin. Dont work. And all who were slain by her were strong men. 27 Her house is the way to hell, Descending to the chambers of death.” cutting your own throat
Application: Some say, well this is the LAW. Well proverbs argues this is Wisdom. And wisdom points at the Law and Prophets. Paul says in Galatians 3:23–25 “ But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”
We don’t walk in perfection, we live in the perfect one. We don’t need to study to be saved, we study to know Him better and live as he has called us. Its that knowledge of His perfect walk, that brought us to where we are. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 “ and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” Its not loving just generic truth, but loving truth, Jesus. The way/truth/life (Jn 14:6)
Its about who's living in you, that your heart would be Christs home. Luke 6:45 “ A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” You still have a choice on how you will live, behave, obey, but remember, the best man lives in us.
