Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
Pray...

Intro:

Don’t run in the house.
“We don’t run with milk.”
Slow down.
Take your time.
Don’t rush.

New Life

(Timer: ___ minutes left)
(Usually between 8:15 and 12:30 to get to 1st point)
James 1:18 ESV
Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
NIV - “he chose to give us birth”
This picks up the analogy from the temptation and sin section.
Desire conceived
Gives birth to sin
Sin fully grown
Gives brings forth (“gives birth”) to Death
The Will of God
The work of God in our lives.
His decision
Like the decision to become a father.
God is primary in new life.
What say does a baby have in being born?
None.
It is the will of his/her parents.
New birth in Christ
It is the will of God.
“born again”
The Word of God
“by the word of truth”
new birth by means of God’s word (v. 18)
must “accept” that word (v. 21)
by doing it (vv. 22–27)

A New Life

(Timer: How much time left?)
Being born again in Christ...
will lead to us being transformed by his word.
There is no such thing as walking the aisle
and remaining unchanged by the word of God.
If you are unchanged,
then you need to doubt in you are “born again”
James 1:21 ESV
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
(v. 21) receive the implanted word
"receive" - accept, take hold of, welcome
"with meekness" - in humility
Jeremiah 31:33 ESV
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
App. “accept the word”
Search the Word
Allow the word to search you.
Put Away v. Receive
"rampant wickedness" - superabundance of evil
“take off”
Colossians 3:8 ESV
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
Tim Keller:
The opposite of anger is not self-control; the opposite of anger is humility. Therefore, the cause of sinful anger is pride. (Tim Keller)

Humbly Assessing Yourself

What makes us a good listener?
Gospel transformation.
James 1:19 ESV
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
What is the cause of anger?
Pride
Lack of humility.
James 1:20 ESV
for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
Not all anger is wrong.
Keller - Anger is energy released to defend and preserve something.
What are you angry about?
Some of us need to be more angry… about righteousness.
Evidence of the Implanted Word

Humbly Responding to People Around You

James 1:19 ESV
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
“Uncontrolled anger leads to uncontrolled speech.” (Moo)
James 1:21 ESV
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
From Proverbs:
Proverbs 29:20 ESV
Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
Proverbs 17:28 ESV
Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.
Proverbs 10:19 ESV
When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
Proverbs 15:28 ESV
The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

Close in Prayer

Closing Song:

“Abide with Me”
Living all of life dependent on him
