Stewarding My Time for Kingdom Advancement
Let's pray together this morning. Be thou our vision. We don't see things clearly we don't see things for how they are. We see things for how We think they are and so we ask that you oh God, will help us to see things with a Gospel Kingdom Vision that you will help us to see people over possessions that you will help us to see Souls over stocks and bonds God we pray that you will help us to number our days recognizing that you are the Lord. Of all.
God, we need your help in our lives. We can't do it alone.
as we've already sung, you are the owner of all things and we are not Help us to Steward. Well that, which you have given us. In Jesus name. Amen.
Quick little update. I appreciate several of you asking and I'll just save the time, some of you heard. My dad went into the hospital yesterday, Steve Jordan, some weird symptoms made it after going to the ER pretty high fever. Some funky other symptoms going on so he would appreciate your prayers. He was a little confused, pulled out his IV last night, other things like that so just appreciate your prayers up date everything. I know as of right now in summary Completely different note. I want to tell you a story about a man living near Chicago.
Call him mark. Because that's his name. Mark lives in a place that is not his own. He's a renter technically. But he knows that the property, as a whole is a blessing to the kingdom of God. That's its intent.
So he is done with no pay. Demolition rehab Plumbing, providing food cleaning up trash along in the parking lot and a plethora of other things. The benefit the property owners. You might call this person, not merely a renter, you probably should refer to them as a steward in a biblical sense. Somebody who is who is managing and running a household or in this case of property for the benefit of the owner. And with an eternal perspective in mind, I want to tell you the story of a of a woman, I'm going to call Georgia. That's not her name. Georgia came to me before we owned what was called, will be call The Hub in Chicago. A property that is used to a further, the kingdom in a variety of different ways. An in Georgia came, and she was homeless and need a place to stay. She had money, she had references, she had a deposit and the end, we let her stay there.
We had a few written rules and end some, some handshake agreements in addition to that. And she proceeded in her stay at this location by following almost none of them.
She trashed the place had a number of visitors overnight. She was smoking. She wasn't supposed to smoke. She wasn't supposed to supposed to smoke anything, but she smoke some things that are categorically. She trashed the place up and she never gave us a dime.
I learned a thing or two about landlord landlord and through through this experience with Georgia.
Reality for a renter versus a steward, is there to get everything they can from the owner in agreement that is put forward. This is what I will follow. This is what I won't follow and I'll tell that the folks in the back Nathan, I apologize. I don't think I ever dragged this sermon up from the bottom and so so the the sermon should be at the very very bottom of the presentation. That's my bad. Y'all keep everybody on their toes. You know and if it's not that's okay.
A stewardess, somebody who is living for someone else. Somebody who recognizes that they're living on behalf of the Kingdom for the kingdom, in this case, and not owning anything themselves, as a renter, is there to get what they can take with her able to and get away with as much as possible. If your land lord then you can probably relate just good for you. Good for you. I want to go through out this sermon in the next couple with a few thoughts. In mind, we are in a new series starting today and it's kind of a continuation of the idea of our summer of stewardship. I think about stewardship, everybody's mind, probably jumps to money. But that is an incomplete concept, biblically of stewardship. And so I want to be fair, I want to handle money, but we're not going to do it today and we're not even going to do it next week. But rather on the third week and then it's going to culminate on September 14th and our invitation Sunday as we invite the whole church to participate. And what we see God doing and where he's leading us specifically with our building project but more broadly within that the vision that we see God giving us and the way that we see him blessing that vision. So I want to, I want to start this off by just letting you know, especially if you're new, or you haven't been here in a while, normally just go through a book of the Bible, we are several weeks into the Book of Matthew, well into chapter 10, chapter by chapter verse by verse through book of the Bible. And then when something comes up, we have to handle it. But sometimes we try to take an excursions from that and in focus on a concept, a Biblical concept that can apply to our lives. So today again, stewardship, Stewarding all of your time for the kingdom of God. Does everybody have one of these handouts? If you don't have a handout, we can get you a hand out. Three of you do, wonderful. The first thing I want to try your attention to and help us 22. Maybe re-establish from a world. Active is it God owns everything I've seen a lot of people that are looking around. Like I never got a handout. I'm just pissed.

It's too many people. Psalm 50. Verses 10 through 15 for every beast of the forest is mine.
The Department of Conservation would argue that's in the state of Missouri. The like no know that dear is mine, unless it goes on the highway. Have you ever noticed it? That is not mine. Didn't cause that $10,000 worth of damage. That was not my dear. Every beast of the forest is God, the cattle on a thousand hills, I know that all the birds of the hills than all that moves in the field as mine, if I were hungry, I would not tell you the world mine. Do I eat the Flesh of bulls or drink? The blood of goats offer to God a sacrifice of Thanksgiving and perform your vows to the most high and call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you and you shall glorify me everything on Earth is God's and it's all 50. We see God extrapolating exactly what that means Carolina. Hill Mine, on a thousand hills not the state park. Mine is well if you think I would need something from you. To send you, if I was hungry, I wouldn't Because I have everything I need. Everything is God's in our 21st century egotistical self-focused World weekend. At least, I tend to think that the things that are mine or mine and the things that are yours are yours. We have a strong value of personal ownership and private property which are not necessarily negative things. But what we need to do, if we want to be biblical in, our thinking, is to shift from thinking about ownership and shift towards thinking about stewardship, A steward is someone who has the the goals in perspective of an owner, they have control they can they can direct and make decisions but they don't do it for their own goals motivation. They do it for the owner's goals motivation, think about it a little bit like Somebody who's investing your your retirement for you? They want that portfolio to grow. They want your money to be increased because, of course, they get a percentage of it, but that's them stewarding the money. So your best interests at heart, your retirement fund. So to speak can grow. And that's the the way that I want us to think about stewarding But not just money, literally everything. We're going to go through a lot of Bible verses today. So get your phone's ready to take pictures. The sermon notes should be online later. Actually maybe not because of my messing up. So take notes and the fullness thereof the world and all those who dwell there and you think I'm a person, I'm a human, I have an identity, I am mine. And that's not what the text of scripture says that the Earth is the Lord's and everything that is in it. Any case that wasn't clear enough. the world and those the people, the animals are living beings. Those who dwell therein everything is the Lord's. You have a title or a deed to your car or your house or your second house or your second car, it's not yours. It's God's. Some 8911, the heavens are yours, the Earth.
When did them?
God is the creator of all, and he retains ownership. Overall.
What you up to Revelations of you say well that's just poetry, just biblical poetry. Let's let's get into the New Testament. Okay. How about in Revelation 4 verse 11. Worthy. Are you, our Lord and God to receive glory, and honor and power. For you created all things and buy you, or will they exist did and were created
We wouldn't even exist apart from the will of God.
And yet he graciously creates you, and I, and then the joyous thing is, he doesn't just create us.
He also redeems us the second Point, your life is not your own. You were created and Redeemed by God. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth and he said mankind, upon this planet. And they rebelled you and I rebelled. We are born in Rebellion, we are born wanting to declare independence from God, and we're really good at it. Satan, the original rebeller from God is really good at helping us to be good at rebelling. So we have rebellion in our hearts, we have Rebellion outside pressure, guiding and helping us to rebel and that leads us down a path. To hell. Where we are tortured for an eternity because of the sinful rebellious Deeds, we have done because of a just God, but he is just, but he is. So Abundant Life full of Mercy. Instead of Destruction, he says no. I will extend mercy and above and beyond that. He extends. Gracie says, you deserve my raft but instead, I will give you the most abundant gift that anyone could ever receive. And that is myself. And so, God gives us himself in the person of Jesus Christ. And when we are in Christ, We have been redeemed or purchased back bought back. From our sinful ways, back into the favor of God himself. So, your life is not your own, you did nothing to bring about your own life. Your own birth. You were no part of it. You were, you were barely a partaker of that. Your first breath came after birth. But then you were born, spiritually, dead, and even then. Your new life in Christ. When you believe in Jesus Christ, at that moment of belief at that moment of surrender. Then you are now a child of God you are again twice made. And then once purchased by God, your life is not your own. Psalm 139 13 through 17 for you. Formed my inward Parts, you needed me together in my mother's womb, I praise you for. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful. Are your Works. My soul knows, it very well. My frame was not hidden from you. When I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the Earth. Your eyes saw, my unformed substance in your book were written. Every one of them, the days that were formed for me when, as yet there was none of them how precious to me or your thoughts. Oh, God. How vast is the sum of them?
See that the days were formed for us by God. God owns everything including your time.
God owns you time. Do you listen to people with wealth? Especially. Books podcasts. The like, you'll hear that time is the only limited commodity that individuals have on this Earth. And it's true. That time is a limited commodity. Most of us, have many limited commodities.
Colossians 1:13 and 14. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son. We are Kingdom citizens. When you believe in Jesus Christ, when you surrender and say, I want to follow Jesus, then you have a new Mission, a new vision, a new command to obey follow in love. Jesus Christ. In whom we have Redemption redeemed, the Forgiveness of sins Godfrey to anyone who will put their faith in Jesus Christ. You can't earn it. But you can be thankful for it. Psalm 90:12 what I told the kids, so teach us to number our days that we may get heart of wisdom. We often refer to wisdom as practical knowledge Something that I know that will help me with a spiritual reality to make decisions that need to be made. You know, knowledge is knowing that there is a voltage running through that outlet. And Joel has enough wisdom to know that. He shouldn't put his tongue inside that outlet.
Twice in one. Start with no more, I promise.
We get wisdom when we recognize how short our lives are. some of you are closer than others to taking your final breath and none of us know which that is We could have all their older than me. They have poor health in. It doesn't matter. And have an aneurysm right now being glory in 10 seconds. Anyone of us.
When we recognize that our life is limited and when our desire becomes to align ourselves with God's will for our lives, then we begin to have that stewardship principle of managing Our Lives. Not for our good, but for God's glory,
James 4:14 yet. You do not know what tomorrow will bring. I love talking about this with kids and maybe they get it from us. I know what tomorrow will bring, I'm going to school tomorrow. well, I hope they do but none of us know that
Have you seen how fast?
You know, they might get to go to school now. I have no idea what God is. The only one who threw the question that we should be asking is how can I get the most out of this life for myself? Or how can I get the most out of my time for the glory of God? If you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, if you are not following wholeheartedly after him, then I recommend you pursue all that this world has to offer. You might as well. You might as well try to bring pleasure and and meaning into your life by your own power. You might as well invest money and spend it. Go on vacations, extravagant cars you might as well cheat other people out of their good so that you can live the good life or you can surrender that false promise of the American dream. That says all you need is more and more and more and you can surrender to God and recognized. He can't get any more. Yeah, he owns it already and he has graciously given to you and I the things that we need to live and then you can say, God what would you have me do with my life? A steward says how can I use all of the things that I have available to me to benefit the owner?
we won't go here long, but we could even Put some pretty good biblical theology together. That says, when you try to take ownership from God, that's exactly what Satan did before he fell, he tried to arrest ownership from God of the things that God had created, and then God said that's mine. and, Satan or Lucifer. And in a third of the angels of heaven fell in Rebellion against God, and God punish them and will punish them eternally by casting them out of heaven. And sometimes you and I and our American mindset do a little bit the same. That's mine, we say, through our actions or 50 hours a week. Do you say through our investments in our driving of that? Nice car, that's why we say of our 9 to 5 or at least are 5 to 9 p.m. where we want to do, what we want to do. We want to, do you make our kids successful, we want to do what we think. We'll we'll make our parents live longer. We want to do what we want to do and we say that's mine and I want to warn you be careful because
God in any point in time can say, no.
That's mine. Because it is everything is his. And so we need to surrender it to God and we thank God. Everything I have came from you. I entered this Earth with nothing except the cells. You put together for me and I'm going to leave this earth with the same. Those cells not deteriorating. All that will live forever is the Eternal part of us.
And so we should surrender before we have to surrender so that we can earn a reward in heaven. How great is that? We have no idea what tomorrow brings. For you are a Mist. We are a Mist that vanishes appears for a little time, and then vanishes James Ford says,
I don't like the heavy-handed, so let's get that out of the way, created for a purpose.
Stewarding God's creation for his kingdom advancement to bring him glory. You were created with old wonderful intent in mind. Can you imagine a master Craftsman? And we have some people that I would call Master Craftsmen in this room masters of their craft and different crafts. Write some of Summer musical. Some are quite literally Craftsman, crafts, women, people who have mastered what they do. Can you imagine a Mastercraft a Craftsman, creating their culminating masterpiece? Maybe it's a piece of art. And let's be honest, if you've seen these pieces of Art, and they spend days and weeks and months and maybe even years working on them and hundreds of thousands of dollars when they're done, everybody asked. What is it?
And when the Craftsman says, I don't know.
That's when that piece of art is in trouble. What do you mean? You don't know what it is and that might think they're going to have a good answer because they're spent hours in years of other life on it.
I don't know why I made it. I don't know what it's for. A bunch of wood or metal or paint or super glue all little conglomerate it together for no reason whatsoever. Then how much of a disappointment would that wonderful piece of artwork? Be? You and I are far greater pieces of artwork by the master Craftsman, God than any piece of artwork on this earth. And the good news is, we were created with a specific intent and people are wandering around trying to find out what that intent is, what was I made for? What is my specific bent? What are my personality types? What what was my childhood trauma? Revealed out who I was born to be.
Ultimately, the only one who knows the answer to why you were made as the one who made you. Why you were formed, just the one who formed you.
So let's see what God has to say in his word about why we were made Genesis 1, 26 through 28. Then God said, let us. We see the Trinity their God referring in the plural to himself. And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness, let them have look at that word, do minion. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens over the livestock and over all the Earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the Earth. Some of us like creeping things in groups better than others. So God created, man in his own image verse 27. In the image of God, he created them male and female, he created them, and God bless them and said be fruitful and multiply, and fill the Earth and subdue it. Why? And have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. Why were you? And I created to be gods. Stewards. Of creation.
We saw that were there. Twice have dominion over again. The word Steward is in the Old Testament, is much more of a Household manager. You think somebody who is wealthy enough to have a household? And somebody who is wealthy enough to have Cattle in abundance in and food for 4 days and not just subsistence living for the day. You think a king? And you think the king does not need to manage his own household. He has people for that.
The Original Series so to speak. That was a little funny, come on. No. God has given you an i stewardship it that we individually, collectively, Steward. This world for him that we report to God. Say okay well, how did, how am I supposed to to spend my time asked God, how am I supposed to to, to Stuart, or to have dominion over the things I'm supposed to have dominion? We look in God's word, we ask him. You're the one that made us. You're the one that gave us this purpose. So you report to God,
How do we know that we're supposed to glorify him and not just ourselves? We could easily read that have dominion over. Can you go? I'm the king of everything I see. Is that Myrtle the Turtle
You ever read, Seuss? Turtle gets higher and the King of Everything I see.
Isaiah 43, 7. Everyone who is called by my name who I created for my glory. The reason you were created, your purpose is to be a steward of God's creation, including your own self for the glory of God and the furtherance of his kingdom. Everyone who is called by not my name, who I created for my glory, who I It's not about you. Rick Warren's famous book, The Purpose Driven. Life starts out with those words. If not about you. Our life is not about us, it's not for us, it's for God, it's for his glory. And when we unlock that wisdom, that knowledge that God freely gives to any will help him open his book and read is that our life with the good life, you can choose to believe it's more and more, and more and more, or you can choose to believe God that it's for him. It's to him that you are formed in made.
1st Corinthians 10:31. So, whether you eat? Or drink. Or whatever you do. But what about yes that too. Well what about you that too? Do it all for the glory of God. I want to take a moment here and pause for an excursus.
We have been led to believe that there is a a simple bifurcation to separation parts to our lives. And and we say that it's the sacred. And it's not the secular, the non sacred, if if I believed that, then my sermon should be something like this.
We used to have Sunday morning, services, and Sunday, evening services. I don't think I've ever actually here. But you know historic list Church, Capital C universal church. Bible study Wednesday night. How many of you are not going to your Bible study, Wednesday? At least, because they are not occupying sacred spaces there instead of occupying secular spaces. So many people are working too much enough. And you know what's wrong about that?
Everything is God's. Including the things that we might have perceived as secular. The time that you spend at work is every bit as sacred as the time you spend at church or at least, it's supposed to be We have things that we do need to do for life and godliness. Most of us have to work really spend some time in her life working. #Retirement. Right.
We have to work, we have to eat most of us when we go to do this, do this hand out later. A big bucket is going to be filled with sleep. Most of us have to sleep. Nothing sacred about sleep.
But when we, when we categorize things into the sacred and secular then we say no Taylor Swift. That's not Sacred Music. And I do prefer that I do like my Christian music and I listened to it almost exclusively. Be why because it helps me fulfill my god-given purpose of glorifying God by stewarding my body, and that music encourages me to Steward my body, my time, my talent, my treasure correctly, but there is nothing inherently wrong about listening to music, There's nothing inherently wrong about going out and plowing a field. In fact we could say that it's pretty difficult to go out and plant a field and to pray that God will water it. And then you pray that God will give the increase and then praise His name when he does and we get to harvest it. So we want to do away with the idea of the Sacred and the secular. And instead we want to allow God to have full rein of 100% of Our Lives.
So whether you eat or drink, those are rather secular things to do, aren't they eating and drinking or whatever you do? Do all to the glory of God. So the harder part of that question is not. Are you doing the sacred things enough? To kind of like be a good Christian. The real hard problem is are you doing everything for the glory of God?
What are you doing it for your glory? You can do the same thing. You're right and wrong, motivational reasons and inform any of us, there's probably a little bit of competition within our own heart. I want to raise up my children to know and love God for the glory of God in for the furtherance of his kingdom. But when my children are behaving like they're supposed to kind of get them accolades too so I don't mind that there's nothing but something wrong with that. No. But you can see that it can get murky in a hurry. So what do we do? We keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and Perfecter of our faith and say God I'm not doing it for my employer. I'm not doing it for my spouse. I'm not doing it for my kids and help me especially not to do it for myself. Help me to do it for the glory of God. All for the glory of God.
Number for my whole life, not part of it. My whole life is to be lived. For God is to be live for God as a thank you for his goodness to me. Remember that Optics concept. It's, it's basically this we take our lives and we hold our lives up to the mirror of God's word. And we say God, will you show me what I need to change? We don't use it as binoculars and say,
I can see that you must be disappointed with him because he's not doing this. We we go to God and we say, Lord show me. Show me how I can use. My whole life is a, thank you to your goodness to me, because you made me when I rebelled you redeemed, me, you gave me purpose, you gave me directions. And now I just want to say thank you to him, not to try to earn his favor because he and Christ loves you and is pleased with you as much as possible.
God, the Father could not love God, the sun anymore. It would be against his ontology, against his very nature to be less than fully loving for God. The Father to God, the son. And when you were in the Sun, God loves you with the love. He has for the son, he can't be more pleased with the Sun.
So we don't do it out of obligation to some manipulative. God, we do it out of gratitude. For a good God. Who loves us so much and has our best in mind. If we can trust God with a very most important thing of all our Salvation, can't we trust him enough to surrender. Our calendar to him.
Romans 12:1 and 2.
Flip there with me. This is this is important enough to make sure that we we read it together have your Bible there. Put a bookmark there for the day. Take your Sheet and put it in, Romans 12.
I appeal to you, therefore Brothers by the mercies of God, to present your bodies, as a Living Sacrifice is acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. That by testing you may discern, what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect, God has given us his word. We don't have to guess what his will is. Sometimes, it's hard to determine this job or that this investment or that This major or that? This woman or that this man or that, right?
But as we allow God to do the work, don't be conformed to this world. Don't adopt the world's values. We've got billion-dollar corporations that are so good at milking us for everything, we're worth. And I'm not just talking about money, I'm talking about the things that our souls love Right. We're still good at loving our devices, because we're told to wear marketed to it. We're so good at loving our sports teams, because it feels so good when the Chiefs get a touchdown. But even better when the Bears do,
Just a little now that I great preseason game, the other night, the Bears won. Against the Chiefs. I know I'm not popular anymore. It's okay. I'm not, I'm not going for popular. We're so good at loving things that we aren't Made to Love. And to do that, our hearts get twisted.
Indus formed. So what are we do? We surrender to the power of the Holy Spirit and what does he do? He renews our minds. He reforms are heart in the shape that it was meant to be. He says I can help you love me, which was why I made you. I made you to Steward the things around you within your Authority and control to Steward them from my glory. Why? So that
love is the primary Christian ethic and we can say when we seek to Stewart Our Lives to glorify God. Then we have a wonderful way of expressing our love back to him. David H McKinney says Romans 12, 12 1 & 2. Is the passage that moves us from getting right with God. Romans 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 getting right with God. It's the passage that moves us from there to living right for him with others. How do we Stewart ourselves to God?
By surrendering ownership of him, a ownership to him and following after him in his will. Everything that God has done for us, is the groundwork for which God wants to do in us and through us in our lives today.
Again, David Mckinney says this is the most essential reality in the Bible, we live in faith and respond to the God was loved us. Redeem, doesn't called us into a relationship with him, all of life. Becomes a. Thank you for God's goodness and grace extended to us. And so when our life is lived as a thank you note to God, we don't go around saying that you didn't. You didn't do as good as you were supposed to.
That's what living sober minded instead we are just so grateful and thankful for what God does that? We live our lives as a thank you note back to him first Corinthians 4:7. You what do you have that? You do not receive write came into this world naked going to leave it just the same way when I pulled myself up by my bootstraps.
How many of you created from nothing? No cells.
No chemical compounds available to use.
No one. We use what God made and gave to us. So then if then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it. This is the story of the American dream I came and I had freedom and I raised myself up by my bootstraps look, aren't I? Great? And said we should say, I was born. God gave me much. I was obedient to him and he gave me more so I just want to give it back to him. Praise the Lord.
For from him. This is Romans 11 and through him, and to him are all things. It's all about Jesus. It's not about you. He owns it, he redeems. You, he says, follow me, we follow him. It's a joyous thing that we get to do. And then it's like a beautiful piece of artwork fulfilling its purpose because we were we are doing what we were made to do.
Five. We must all give an account. So take account of your life. the sheet is for Just kind of some reminders, the first four points. And then it's just, it's just a weekly calendar. Talk about surrendering and stewarding your time to God.
Right. Go there and write down. Anything that takes you more than a half an hour. Just a week's worth of taking a lot of classes on leadership and and self-management things like this. In almost every one of them begins with us. A lot of people call it like a bucket. Inventory time, bucket inventory. That's why there's buckets in the bottom. And so you just write down the things that taking half an hour or more minutes, that's too much work.
The first bucket. I'm going to help you feeling right now. I really have a pen. Right, sleep. You should be getting some some rest, some sleep, some of us more than others. I know that's a challenge for some anything that takes a half an hour, just write it down.
My commute to work. Most of us don't have half an hour. Commute to praise the Lord. Welcome to Kirksville, right?
Church Sunday morning church, Chino you go right there. First thing you get to write Church down in time inventory.
What are you spending your time hun in your week? And then put them in buckets. You might call it my corporate spiritual life right here, in that first bucket, right? I intentionally left them blank for you write sleep, Personal Care, work, parenting, Leisure and then look and see categorically.
1st 2nd Corinthians 5:10 says you and I we all must appear before the Judgment seat of Christ. So that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. Does not salvific, it's not whether or not you will spend eternity with God or eternity in hell, this is what your rewards will be like in heaven.
What we do in this life matters, what? We invest our time and makes a difference.
Right now, I'm not trying to pick on anyone specifically except myself. An hour cheering for the Bears can be an hour wasted. Or can you be an hour and vested in relationship?
Talking to my kids, having those for me, those good memories spending time with friends doing it with a small group.
Spending my time at work can be drudgery with a bad attitude or can be an example for the believer in for the non what a good Christian employee or employer can look like you can do it for my daughter for you into you.
Evaluate your time.
