John, Son of Thunder

John was one of four fishermen who were disciples of Jesus - Mark 1:16-20

Mark 1:16–20 NIV
16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Jesus gave John and his brother James, the nickname “Sons of Thunder” - Mark 3:17

Mark 3:17 NIV
17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”),

James and John once wanted to call down fire from heaven on a Samaritan village - Luke 9:51-55

Luke 9:51–55 NIV
51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them.

James and John also thought of themselves as the most important among the disciples - Mark 10:35-40

Mark 10:35–40 NIV
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” 39 “We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

The Transformation of John

John became part of Jesus’ inner circle - Mark 5:37

Mark 5:37 NIV
37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
This inner circle is mentioned three times:
The healing of Jairus’ daughter
The Transfiguration
In the Garden of Gethsemane

John came to understand the importance of time with Jesus - John 15:4-5

John 15:4–5 NIV
4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

John experienced the love of Jesus

John repeatedly refers to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved”

John, Apostle of Love

At the end of Jesus’ ministry, we see a transformed man.

John was closest to Jesus at the Last Supper - John 13:23

John 13:23 NIV
23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.

John was the only disciple at the cross - John 19:26-27

John 19:26–27 NIV
26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
John was first to believe Jesus had risen - John 20:1-8
John 20:1–8 NIV
1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” 3 So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Twenty-Two: The Dawning of a New Day (John 20:1–18)

Paul describes this transformation as the Fruit of the Spirit - Galatians 5:22-23
