Introduction — A Letter in the Mailbox
Anybody use Google? When you use the Google site for a search, and you enter your question, you’ll notice that as you type your question, Google starts to popupulate what it thinks will be the next letter you type based on the most common searches on the platform. That’s where this next video comes from. It’s actual populated words based on what most people search for when starting the sentences this way…
***Video: “UNLIKE CHRIST”***
***Video: “UNLIKE CHRIST”***
Imagine this: next Sunday, you check the church mailbox and find a letter. The handwriting is unique. The return address is unlike any you’ve seen. You open it… and it’s from Jesus Himself.
Not a chain email from someone claiming divine inspiration — a real letter from the risen Christ, addressed to our church, much like the letters in Revelation 2–3.
We’ve just studied those seven letters together:
Some churches received commendation.
Some got correction.
All were called to listen.
The phrase repeated in every letter was: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Now the question is… what would Jesus say about us?
Not Ephesus.
Not Laodicea.
Village of Faith.
This is a checkpoint sermon. It’s not meant to stir guilt but to stir grace. Not to condemn, but to correct and commission.
Scripture Reading
Scripture Reading
(SLIDE 01) 2 Corinthians 13:5 NIV
Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
Greek Insight:
The word “examine” here is δοκιμάζετε (dokimazete) — a testing process done not to destroy, but to approve. It’s like a jeweler putting gold to the flame to prove its authenticity.
(SLIDE 02) Point 1 – Reflection: Our Mirror of Measurement
(SLIDE 02) Point 1 – Reflection: Our Mirror of Measurement
Explanation:
Explanation:
In Revelation 1:20, the churches are called lampstands — designed to reflect the light of Christ into a dark world. Each of the seven churches teaches us something:
Ephesus – lost its first love.
Smyrna – faithful in suffering.
Pergamum – compromised with culture.
Thyatira – tolerated sin.
Sardis – had a reputation for life but was dead.
Philadelphia – faithful and mission-minded.
Laodicea – lukewarm and blind.
The question isn’t which church we like most — it’s which church we look most like.
Application:
Application:
What would Jesus commend in Village of Faith? If we are going to be like Jesus—what we should want to be, we need to assess ourselves from a point of reality.
“You are not ‘just a sinner saved by grace.’ You are the justified by the blood. You are the Bride of Christ. You are a new creation in Christ Jesus. The old has now passed away, behold ALL things have become new. Why would you want to hang the price tag of hell on a treasure heaven has bought?” - Kelly Kopp
WE NEED TO START ACTING LIKE THE CHURCH THE CROSS OF CHRIST SAYS WE ARE AND STOP CLAIMING AS OUR IDENTITY THE PERSON THE BLOOD THAT WAS SHED THERE HAS NOW WASHED AWAY. YES, WE STILL MESS UP. NO, WE ARE NOT YET PERFECT. BUT WE ARE MORE THAN CONQUERORS IN CHRIST JESUS. WE ARE HIS BRIDE THE CHURCH! That is our REALITY we should be living from. You have a NEW NAME written down in glory and you wear the name of Jesus, our King. Can we start acting like it? We are not a country club with a cross. We are not a town square. We are a hospital for the hurting who needs healing. We are the Church of the Living God and the very gates of hell cannot stand against us! That’s who we are!
Would He praise our faithfulness like Philadelphia?
Or warn us like Ephesus that we’ve drifted from our love for Him?
Do we have a servant heart like Smyrna? I don’t mean when it’s convenient. Anyone can do that. I mean a sacrificial servant heart like what Smyrna had.
Accountability Question:
If you had to give Him one concrete example from this week that proves your love for Him hasn’t grown cold, could you?

Hold up your phone: “When you flip your camera to selfie mode, what do you see? The angle, the lighting, the smudges on the lens, or especially if you forget to focus — all distort the picture. That’s what happens when we measure ourselves by culture or comparison. But when we let the Word be our lens, the reflection clears, and we see who we really are in Christ.”
Transition (to Point 2):
Transition (to Point 2):
But if the focus shows something we’d rather not see — pride, sin, or distraction — we can’t just ignore it. That’s when it’s time to change direction. That’s where repentance comes in.
Point 2 – Repentance: Our Moment of Movement
Point 2 – Repentance: Our Moment of Movement
Explanation:
Explanation:
Five of the seven churches received strong rebukes — yet every rebuke came with an invitation to repent.
Revelation 3:2 — “Wake up! Strengthen what remains…”
Revelation 2:16 — “Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will come to you…”
Revelation 3:20 — Even Laodicea, the lukewarm church, was invited: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock…”
The Greek word for “repent” is μετανοέω (metanoeō) — to change one’s mind, to turn around. It’s a change in direction and affection.
Application:
Application:
Where have we tolerated sin, apathy, or distraction? Where is Village of Faith coasting instead of contending for the faith?
Accountability Question:
What is one area of your life that you know the Spirit has been pointing out — and if you had to answer Christ today, what excuse would you offer for not turning from it?

[Prop: GPS or map app on phone]
When you miss a turn, the GPS doesn’t scream condemnation — it simply says, “Recalculating.” Repentance is Heaven’s recalculation — not judgment, but a divine re-route.
Transition (to Point 3):
Transition (to Point 3):
Repentance is the turning point, but it’s not the finish line. Once we’ve turned back to Christ, He renews our strength and gives us fresh momentum for the mission.
Point 3 – Renewal: Our Mission of Momentum
Point 3 – Renewal: Our Mission of Momentum
Explanation:
Explanation:
To each church, Jesus gave a promise to the overcomer — Greek νικῶν (nikaō), “one who conquers or prevails.”
Promises included:
Revelation 2:7 – “The right to eat from the tree of life.”
Revelation 3:12 – “I will write on them the name of My God and My new name.”
This isn’t about perfection — it’s about direction. The question isn’t “Have you arrived?” but “Are you still moving toward Him?”
Stephen’s Standing Ovation:
Stephen’s Standing Ovation:
Acts 7:55–56 says Stephen saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God as he was being stoned. Scripture usually describes Jesus sitting — because the work of redemption is finished. But Stephen’s faithful witness was so powerful that Jesus stood to welcome him home.
Dad’s Sardis Insight:
Dad’s Sardis Insight:
My Dad, our Pastor, said in his sermon on the church at Sardis, “God doesn’t just want to be proud of you when you get to Heaven — He wants to be proud of you now.” God is not as concerned about your “well done” as He is to see your “doing well.” (yes, that “your” is the one I meant)
Application:
Application:
Will Village of Faith be known as a church that reflects His truth, radiates His love, and relentlessly pursues His mission?
Accountability Question:
If Jesus were to write our “new name” today — a name describing who we really are as a church — what would He call us?
Illustration:

[Prop: Phone charger & battery indicator on screen]
“Think of your phone battery. No matter how good the phone is, if it’s not recharged, it dies. Renewal is plugging back into the Spirit of God. That’s what keeps us moving, conquering, and overcoming. The tree of life, the new name, the crown — they’re promises to those who stay plugged into Him.”
Transition (to Conclusion):
Transition (to Conclusion):
Reflection shows us who we are, repentance turns us around, and renewal fuels our forward motion. Now the question remains: what letter would Jesus write about us?
Conclusion – The Letter Test
Conclusion – The Letter Test
We can’t rewrite the story of Ephesus or Laodicea. But we are writing the letter Jesus will read about Village of Faith.
If Jesus walked in here next Sunday with a personal letter…
Would He commend?
Would He correct?
Would He rejoice?
2 Corinthians 13:5 doesn’t ask, “Do you attend church?” — it asks, “Are you becoming the Church?”
“Buildings are built by people who already have been.” Have been what? Built! And the evidence that you have been “built” is the fruit you produce.
Action Steps:
Personally reflect this week using Revelation 2–3 as a checklist.
Corporately ask: Where is Jesus inviting us to grow?
Commit to overcome: Say yes to God’s refining work, not someday, but now.
Closing
Closing
Church, this is our moment — not to drift, not to delay, but to decide!
We will not be a lukewarm lampstand. We will not be a fogged-up mirror. We will be a blazing beacon, burning bright with the love, the truth, and the mission of our Master!
It’s time to reflect His light without distortion.
It’s time to repent of every distraction and detour.
It’s time to renew our devotion and determination to be an overcoming, unshakable, unstoppable church!
Village of Faith, the King is not calling us to coast — He’s calling us to conquer!
The Spirit is not nudging us to nap — He’s igniting us to advance!
We are the people of God, planted in this place for this purpose, for such a time as this.
And hear me — our Savior is not sitting in the stands, hoping we cross the finish line. No! He’s standing, cheering us on, ready to receive us like Stephen with a standing ovation! He’s proud of us when we walk by faith now, not just when we enter glory.
So let’s rise up, stand strong, and step forward until the day we hear the Victor’s voice say,
“Well done, good and faithful servant!”
Now — let’s go live the letter He would be proud to write about us!
10 Reality-Check Questions from the Seven Churches
10 Reality-Check Questions from the Seven Churches
Have I, or have we as a church, substituted routine, programs, or personal preferences for raw, burning love for Jesus? If Christ read my worship, would He see passion for Him — or performance for me?First Love Check (Revelation 2:4)
When opposition or ridicule comes, do I stay sacrificially faithful, or do I shrink back for the sake of safety and comfort? Do I only follow Jesus when it costs me nothing?Faithfulness Under Pressure (Revelation 2:10)
Am I actively guarding my life and our church from lies, gossip, compromise, and false teaching, or do I quietly tolerate ideas and influences that undermine God’s truth?Doctrinal Discernment (Revelation 2:14–15, 20)
Where am I allowing immorality, impurity, or worldly thinking to live unchallenged in my life? Where is our church excusing what God calls sin instead of confronting it?Holiness and Purity (Revelation 2:20–21)
Am I spiritually alive right now — praying, growing, bearing fruit — or am I coasting on a reputation of past faithfulness while inwardly stagnant or dying?Spiritual Vitality (Revelation 3:1)
