Jesus: Fully Human, Fully Divine - Our Perfect High Priest

And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

This was an answer to Mary’s question in verse 34.....she knew how this worked

she was a virgin

she was engaged to Joseph

How could she conceive

She didn’t doubt God she just didn’t understand how He was going to do it

Holy Spirit coming upon her and power of the Most High that is how He was going to do it

Wow

that is awesome!!!!!!

They planed the physical seed

they made her pregnant with Jesus

That made Jesus fully human

born of a physical virgin

Pegan mythology saw gods....little g gods and deities sleeping with human women creating divine humans

super humans

this is not that.....many claimed it was but this was God Almighty setting in motion His plan to reconcile the world back to Himself through His son

God did not have intercourse with Mary....she was a virgin before she was pregnant and a virgin the entire time she was pregnant

God planted the seed inside of her

God made her pregnant not by intercourse but by His power

As is our custom we will turn to scripture as scripture teaches scripture

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

This was about the 8th century BC....about 735 BCV

Seven hundred years BEFORE Jesus God said it was so!

How amazing is that?

Why can’t God have your problems handled again?

Galatians 4:4

Fully flesh

born of a woman

here we see another major point and part of fulfilment of prophecy

Jesus was born under the law

God could have left it there

for me that is more than enough already but God went deeper

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Jesus was flesh and from the blood line of David

there is zero doubt about who or what God was talking about

who Jesus

what Line of David

None.....zero doubt

you can choose to reject it but scripture has clearly spoken

So who cares

why is it so important

That is what we are going to look at the rest of our time together this morning

1. It was prophecy fulfilled

The Old Testament scriptures we looked at were prophecy

God telling us something was coming and going to happen

I pray what we have already looked at is enough for you to believe Jesus fulfilled these prophecies but just in case you run across someone still doubting

Matthew 22:41-46

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet” ’? If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Not only does Jesus point to Him being the son of David therefore fulfilling prophecy but by quoting Psalm 110:1 He proves His deity

That brings us to reason 2 in answering why this is all important

2. Jesus being fully human and fully God qualified Him to be our substitute in death to pay for our sins

John the Baptist whom God sent to pave the way for Jesus

boldly

publicly declaring Jesus

Lamb of God who takes away the sins for the world!!!!!!

II Corinthians 5:21

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Jesus was fully human

Jesus was fully God

Jesus lived a perfect life

Jesus never sinned

But so that we who have sinned could become righteousness of God

God made Jesus who was without sin to become our sin on the cross

Jesus was the only perfect sacrifice

Jesus was the only atoning sacrifice

Jesus was the only truly acceptable sacrifice

Jesus was the only saving sacrifice

Jesus was the final sacrifice

Jesus became our sin then died to pay the price for our sin

In the process Jesus overcame sin

In being resurrected Jesus overcame death

and because Jesus was fully man....flesh

Jesus overcame flesh

Only Jesus was qualified to do this!!!!!

3. Sympathetic High Priest

And again in this passage he said, “They shall not enter my rest.” Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Jesus knows you

Jesus gets you

not in the way the world and he gets us movement wants you to believe

satan sells, that is where the he gets us movement comes from.....just look at those behind it

satan sells a condoning Jesus

satan sells an accepting Jesus

Jesus died for me so He loves me....very true but satan and the world go beyond that

Jesus died for me so He loves me and accepts me just as I am......He is okay with my sinful lifestyle

He is okay with my sinful choices

He is okay with me living my life anyway I choose

He is okay with me defining truth

He is okay with me defining my gender

He is okay with me doing this or that sin

That couldn’t be further from the truth

Jesus became those sins

Jesus died for those sins

I am blessed to be in a Men’s group that meets once a month....we met for the first time in August and one of the things we talked about was how much obedience must play a part in our lives as Christian men

Jesus says you don’t love Him unless you obey Him

John 14:15

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

This isn’t a suggestion

If you love me you should keep my commandments

No this is a commandment

If you love Me, you WILL keep my commandments

Now lets look at why

Many use this verse to justify being legalistic

many use this verse to justify defining what love looks like and is......their understanding of obedience

John 15:12-14

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.

Pretty clear here

Jesus commandment is that you love one another as He loved you

We are visual people

Some of us can imagine what that loved looked like but most of us need a visual reminder

Some of us need to hear it explained to truly understand and visualize ourselves

I am going to attempt to do that for you this morning

I am going to give a warning this will make you uncomfortable....or at least it should if you are truly saved and love Jesus

why

this is what you and i did to Him

what He took

We deserve to look and sound like this not Jesus but He willingly and quietly without complaint took this for us

Again what you see and hear is going to be disturbing but necessary

This is the instrument that was used to beat Jesus

Flagrum there on the left

it was a handle with leather whip that extended into branches that had bone and metal weights tied to it

Romans would tie Jesus to a pole and beat him from his shoulders to his heels

this was designed to tear flesh from the bone

Jesus would have had ribs exposed and by the time He mounted the cross His spine would have been exposed and probably rubbing the rough wood of the cross

This is what HE endured for you

This is what you deserve but what He took

This is a screen shot of the youtube Passion of the Christ and is probably not completely accurate but gives us a visual of what Jesus in the flesh...fully human endured for you and for me

Why is that important because in John Jesus just told us to love others just like that

endure indescribable hardships for others because you love them and want to point them to Jesus

That is His commandment

Does that describe your life or are you running from others pain and hardship because it makes you uncomfortable

If that is the case you don’t love Jesus

not my words His Word!

All of this makes Jesus the perfect and sympathetic High Priest

What does that mean to us

Jesus knows you

Jesus gets you

satan wants to isolate you

satan wants you so full of

guilt and shame that you run and hide making it easier for Him to destroy you

Jesus says

daughter

I get it

I felt it

I lived in the flesh

I know exactly what you are feeling

I know exactly what you are failing in

I never failed

I never sinned but I know exactly what you are feeling and why you are failing

I understand

Come to me and let Me give you peace and rest and forgiveness

Confess your sins

repent of your sins and ways and come to me

I got you

I was you and I offer you something that you can only get from me and that is salvation and true freedom!

On top of that through me you can approach the throne of grace with confidence

You and I get to enter into the throne room of God with confidence because of Jesus

Don't you ever pray timid

don't you ever pray scared

don't you ever not turn to God if you are saved because through Jesus you must pray in confidence because of Him

you understand even in your failures because of Jesus you can be confident of forgiveness and even better than that right standing with God Himself

Only Jesus the perfect, sympathetic High Priest can offer you that

How many times do you fall

sin

fail and cower as a result

you hide

you make excuses

you try to justify

you either pray from a place of fear or are too scared to pray at all

That is not where God wants you

II Timothy 1:7

for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

You have God’s Spirit

Holy Spirit

living inside of you

this is the same Holy Spirit that was present at creation

this is the same Holy Spirit who as a dove landed on Jesus shoulder at His baptism

this is the same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead in that borrowed tomb

you have power running through your veins in the Holy Spirit if you are a Christian

Quit letting satan tell you that you are

weak

that you are helpless

that you are alone and the only one who knows what you are going through

stop letting satan sell you the lie that you are the ONLY one dealing with this sin so therefore if you confess the world will reject you and destroy you

the world will reject you and destroy you because of Jesus never because of sin because sin is of the world

you are to be dead to the world

Luke 9:23

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

That same cross that Jesus took up you are to take up daily and follow Him

live as He lived

die as He died

Love as He loved

I want you to know something this morning that we know through Jesus as our High Priest

God still delivers

God still breaks chains

God still redeems

God still reconciles

God still saves

It is all in Jesus!

Jesus walked in the flesh

Jesus lived in the flesh

Jesus was perfect in the flesh

Jesus became your sin and my sin on the cross in the flesh

Jesus died in the flesh

Jesus overcame the death and sin and the flesh so that He can give you that same freedom this morning
