Last week we ended with the concept of knowing them by their fruits.
What does that concept really mean?
How can that concept be practiced in our lives?
What was the focus of that section and how does it lead into the subject Jesus broaches in our time this morning?
Let’s read Matthew 7:21-23:
Matthew 7:21–23 ESV
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Do not just hear!

Matthew 7:21 ESV
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Hosea 8:2 ESV
2 To me they cry, “My God, we—Israel—know you.”
Romans 2:13 ESV
13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
James 1:22 ESV
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Many will say...

Matthew 7:22 ESV
22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’
Many will say...people are trying to grasp at the straws of saying I did this or that in your name.
We revert back to Ephesians 2:8-9
Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
But no without vs. 10
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Faith without works is dead, but works devoid of faith is powerless.
Matthew 7:23 ESV
23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
