Intro

Story of deciding what has worth. This week my wife and I were debating if we should spend the $ to go to her 10yr reunion.
What’s an example of a time this week, you had to decide the worth of something.
Tonight we’re going to talk about how do we live worthy lives. What does that mean?

Main Passage

Philippians 1:27 NIV
27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel

Worthy -

ἀξίως, axios adverb, suitably; worthily, in a manner worthy of:
scales - word picture
worthy of Christ - deserving of Christ
Paradox: we are unworthy - we don’t deserve Christ
Romans 3:23 “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 6:23 “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Through the gospel - Christ attributes worth to us by His death on a cross

John 3:16 NIV
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
The cross
Genesis 1:26–27 NIV
26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Colossians 1:15 NIV
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

As recipients of the gospel, we then attribute worth to Christ by the way we live

Philippians 1:27 “27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel”
worthy of Christ - what is Christ worth?
Judas - 30 pieces of silver
Matthew 26:15 “15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver.”
Revelation 4:8–11 NIV
8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “ ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”
God is worthy of Worship
Worship Etymology:
Worth + Ship = Worship
Worship is the means by which we attribute or aknowledge worth in something or someone.
How do we worship God as we study?
doing things with excellence // not a C’s get degrees mentality
doing things with Him in mind
Worship is the discipline; the practice of getting our eyes off of ourselves and on Jesus

Mark of maturity: worship God fully

The way we live lives of worship is not just by our individual lives; but by our interconnected lives.
Philippians 1:27 NIV
27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel
“Striving together”
