How many of you have ever built a house, or had a house built, not everyone has right, well today I am going to show you that we are all building a house. When you build a house what do you start with, do you start with the roof, the windows, no you start with the foundation and this is the most important piece, if you do not have a good foundation the rest of your house will fall apart. Today Jesus is still teaching us about what the Kingdom life looks like, and again we see a comparison we either choose the Kingdom or destruction, Jesus or the world, life or death. the question for us today is where are you building your house. And when I say house, I mean your life, Jesus is asking where do you stand in your life, do you stand with Him or against Him. Song
Matthew 7:24–25 ESV
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
Matthew 7:26–27 ESV
26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Matthew 7:24 ESV
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
“Everyone” some translations say therefore who hears and does My words—obedience to what Jesus has taught and will teach. It’s more than just listening or reading, our obedience takes action. Remember what He had just said about not everyone who says Lord, Lord. Jesus tells us just as James did be doers or the word not just hearers only, wonder where James got that from. We hear it we take it in, we internalize it and we do it. Jesus tells us His will and the Fathers are the same and we are wise to listen and do. He says the wise man is someone who builds their house on the rock—the word is Petra or Petras which means bedrock. He builds on the unshakable foundation. He is wise because he has heard and now does what Jesus teaches. His foundation is secure in the One who built the foundations of the earth. When you get ready to build a house, you want someone with experience right someone with a good resume, who better to hire as your GC than the creator of everything.
Matthew 7:25 ESV
25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
He hears he does and now the storms of life, the lies of the devil beat on him, but it did not fall. No Jesus does not say it did not stumble, but what it did not do was fall. Why because it had a firm foundation, one built on the rock. God is our stronghold, our fortress, a place where we are secure from the rain, the floods and the winds of life. We are not left out of these experiences but protected as we go through them, it says they beat on the house—the house must go through the storm, but it does not have to weather the storm alone. The only way this house stands is in Christ. He is unwavering, unchanging, an immovable Foundation.
Matthew 7:26 ESV
26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
Now for the foolish. The one who hears Jesus words, but does not do them. They hear, but do not take to heart, they go through the motions, but they are only putting on a show. He builds his houses foundation on the sand. They can fall into several categories, they are a wolf in sheep’s clothing, they are self-deceived, they are deceived by the wolf, they are trying to make their own way, what ever the case, it is clear that they do not KNOW Jesus.
Matthew 7:27 ESV
27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
He is foolish for building on the sand because it is not stable, sand is easily influenced by the circumstances around it. Here is the deal, these two houses don’t look any different from each other. On the outside they are exactly the same, they have both been exposed to Jesus’ teachings only the one goes on to not only hear them but to live out what they have heard. Great was it’s fall, it just didn’t stumble it fell. These storms represent two different things, 1) like have already mentioned the storms of life 2) God’s final judgment. which ever the case the end results are the same, an eternity without God.

The rock is not influenced by the circumstances surrounding it. The sand on the other had is. Two identical houses in appearance, the only difference is what they are built on—what is in their heart, their fruit. The true follower of Jesus, their righteousness will be evident in their relationships and in their daily choices, they are living the Kingdom life as Jesus has instructed them.

The Sermon on the Mount

Where are you building your house? Are you relying on what you say, or the fact that your sitting in church today to be your foundation or are you truly building on the rock. It takes a relationship with Christ to have this bedrock foundation, a change of the heart. Have you allowed the world to water down the concrete mix of your foundation.
