Running after God?

Last week
The Lie
Satan asks deceiving questions
God is holding out
Eat the fruit it will make you wise
Genesis 3:8–13 “8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.” 11 “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” 13 Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.””

v8 - The intimacy and grace offered by God

Opportunity to fully know God unhindered relationship
Hear God walk… God made his presence known.
No trick or surprise. - Kindness - grace

The response of sin is Fear & Hiding.

What was thought of as wise is now stupidity
Moreover Shame filled
Nakedness is a realization of separation from God.
Felt unworthy of being close to God.
When we know we have sinned we Hide
Coldplay concert
The irony of hiding among the trees…
Where is a good place to hid from God?
The issue is the Heart!

v9-11 - God asks a series of questions

This question is totally different than the serpents question.
Snake - question gives false power and accuse God of bad.
God gave - Boundaries and Responsibility. No passive aggressive questions.
not a sarcastic parent tone - I told you so…
Some are so accustom to passive aggressive they don’t realize it’s not true
He knows! Do you know?!?
Where are you?
Who tricked you?
What are you responsible for?
Gods - I know what’s going on do you?
God asked and still today asks questions for the same reason
God asks Cain
Genesis 4:9 “9 Afterward the Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?” “I don’t know,” Cain responded. “Am I my brother’s guardian?””
God asks Abraham
Genesis 18:14 “14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.””
God asks Job
Job 38:4 “4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.”
God asks Jonah
Jonah 4:4 “4 The Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry about this?””
Jesus asks the disciples
Mark 8:27 “27 Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he asked them, “Who do people say I am?
Jesus asks Peter 3 times
Do you love me
God asks important questions to cut through our hog wash…
He is reminding us of
Who we are
Who He is
What’s really going on

God invites us to see the truth

Sin twists the truth.
God isn’t always good
Your truth is most important
Don’t make opinions truth.
Even theology
Especially those from pain
Pain can point you to the truth, but unless you heal you will see it thought the pain.
What has God asked you? or What is he asking you right now?
Listen!
Bible
Micah 6:8 “8 No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
Not listing and filling your head with stuff is hiding!
Adam responds to God

v12-13 Blame

Instead of asking for forgiveness and saying sorry he
Blames God and the woman
God’s fault
The person you put this person in my life.
The woman’s fault
Remember Adam standing there saying nothing?
God gives the woman a shot
She blames the snake.
What’s missing?
Taking responsibility for sin and asking for forgiveness is the lesson we all need to learn about sin.

Conclusion

How will you respond to God?
Fear
Hiding
What’s this look like
Not sharing yourself
Blaming
Accusing parents
Love
Own it
The sooner the better!
Peter Gets it right after getting it wrong!
Fear cause Peter to deny
Love caused Peter to chase after
1 John 4:16–18 “16 We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. 17 And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. 18 Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.”
The requirement for being a Christ-follower is I have sinned.
Everyday we recognize we need Jesus
