Introduction
Church, our scripture today says:
“Get up,” the angel said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt… for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
Beloved, Advent is not just about a baby in a manger—it’s about the God who provides for His Son and for His people. Even when danger rises, God makes a way. Even when enemies plot, God provides protection, direction, and provision.
Somebody shout—“God will provide!”
This morning, I want to show you from this passage how Advent reminds us of God’s provision:
Provision of Protection
Provision of Direction
Provision of Restoration
Point 1: Provision of Protection (vv. 13–15)
Point 1: Provision of Protection (vv. 13–15)
When Herod threatened Jesus’ life, God sent an angel to Joseph in a dream: “Get up and go to Egypt.”
Notice: God didn’t remove the danger, but He provided protection through a way of escape.
Illustration: Ever been driving and took a detour because your GPS warned of traffic or danger up ahead? That detour may feel inconvenient, but it’s really protection.
That’s what God did—He rerouted Joseph, Mary, and Jesus to Egypt, because His plan will not be stopped.
Application:
To the young folks: God can protect your purpose even when you don’t understand what’s going on around you.
To parents and elders: God sees the threats around your family, and He knows how to keep you covered.
To all of us: protection doesn’t mean no trouble—it means God is keeping you in the trouble.
Call and Response:
“Neighbor, I’m still here because God protected me!”
Point 2: Provision of Direction (vv. 19–21)
Point 2: Provision of Direction (vv. 19–21)
After Herod died, another angel came and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel.”
God not only protected them—He gave them direction. He told them when to go, where to go, and how to go.
Illustration: When you travel by plane, you can’t move until the tower gives clearance. God is our control tower. He says, “Hold on now, don’t move yet.” And then He says, “Now is the time—go ahead and take off.”
Church, provision is not just God giving you stuff—it’s God giving you guidance.
Application:
Don’t just thank God for your blessings—thank Him for your instructions.
When you don’t know which way to turn, trust that the Lord will direct your steps.
Call and Response:
“Order my steps, Lord!”
Point 3: Provision of Restoration (vv. 22–23)
Point 3: Provision of Restoration (vv. 22–23)
Joseph was afraid to go back to Judea because Archelaus was ruling, so God directed them to Galilee. And the Word says: “He went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.”
God provided not just protection, not just direction—but restoration of purpose. Even the detour to Nazareth fulfilled prophecy! What looked like a setback was really a setup.
Illustration: Our ancestors were brought to this land in chains, but God provided restoration—turning pain into praise, sorrow into song, and struggle into strength.
God knows how to take a detour and turn it into destiny.
Application:
Don’t despise where God has placed you—it might be Nazareth, but it’s still part of the plan.
Your restoration doesn’t always come where you thought it would—but God’s provision will always put you back in purpose.
Call and Response:
“What the enemy meant for evil, God worked it for my good!”

Church, Advent shows us not just the coming of Christ, but the provision of God!
God provided protection from Herod’s schemes.
God provided direction through angelic guidance.
God provided restoration by fulfilling prophecy in Nazareth.
And if God provided for Jesus, He will surely provide for you!
So lift up your head:
When the enemy rises—God will provide!
When you don’t know which way to go—God will provide!
When it looks like your story is over—God will provide!
Call and Response Celebration:
If He ever protected you—say yes!
If He ever directed you—say yes!
If He ever restored you—give Him praise!
Because the same God who made provision for His Son will make provision for His children.
Now give God your best Advent praise—because we serve a God who always provides!
