Class 22: The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

Key Scriptures

Matthew 28 — The empty tomb, the angel’s message, the Great Commission.
Luke 24 — Road to Emmaus, Jesus appears to disciples, ascension.
John 20 — Mary Magdalene at the tomb, Thomas’ doubt turned to faith.

Introduction

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. Without it, the cross would be a tragedy and the gospel powerless. But because Jesus rose, sin is defeated, death is conquered, and eternal hope is secured. The resurrection not only transformed the first disciples, but it continues to transform lives today.

Historical Background

Jewish Burial Practices
Bodies were placed in rock-cut tombs, sealed with large stones.
Roman guards were stationed at Jesus’ tomb to prevent rumors of theft (Matthew 27:62–66).
Evidence of the Resurrection
The empty tomb was discovered by women — unlikely witnesses in that culture, showing authenticity.
Multiple appearances of the risen Christ: to Mary, to the disciples, to Thomas, and later to over 500 (1 Corinthians 15:6).
Transformation of disciples: from fear and hiding to bold proclamation of the gospel, even unto death.
Theological Significance
Fulfillment of Scripture (Psalm 16:10; Hosea 6:2).
Validation of Jesus as Son of God (Romans 1:4).
Guarantee of our future resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20–22).

Teaching Outline

I. The Empty Tomb (Matthew 28:1–10; John 20:1–10)

Women found the stone rolled away and angels announced, “He is not here; He is risen!”
The empty tomb is the ultimate proof of His victory over death.

II. Resurrection Appearances (Luke 24; John 20)

Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene, calling her by name.
Walked with two disciples on the road to Emmaus, opening the Scriptures to them.
Appeared to the disciples, showing His wounds, breathing peace and the Spirit upon them.
Thomas’ doubt turned to faith when he saw the risen Lord.

III. The Commissioning of the Disciples (Matthew 28:18–20)

Jesus declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”
Sent His disciples to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching.
Promised His presence until the end of the age.

IV. Lessons for Us

The resurrection is the foundation of Christian faith and hope.
Because Jesus lives, we too shall live eternally with Him.
Resurrection power enables us to live boldly, without fear.
