Different elements of self-denial in discipleship:
It is an open offer (9:23a)
It is a daily decision (9:23b)
It is a salvific sacrifice (9:24)
Notes:
Cross-carrying comes first
Bonhoeffer: “When Christ bids a man to follow Him, He bids that man to come and die.”
Gal. 2:20
: “I have been crucified with Christ...”
“We are required to carry our cross because life lies at the other side of it (v. 24).”
Being a disciple requires “a shift of orientation”
A call to follow Jesus’ example of self-denial in the wilderness
