John 5:30–47

6th grade year, assigned seats on bus, the guy I was assigned to sit with was an 8th grader. Cut a hole and rip the cushion out. I had to help pay to fix the seat.
Later that year he tried to burn the school down and from then on the principal listened and respected me.
Big Idea: Jesus brings the ultimate evidence that He is God’s Son. The question is: What’s your verdict on Jesus?

1. Jesus is Humble but Powerful (vv. 30–32)

Jesus doesn’t brag—He says, “I can do nothing on my own… I seek not my own will but the will of Him who sent me.”
Imagine if your parents said “Everything we have is now yours, all the cars, the money, the food, our possessions, ALL yours.” What would you do first?
Notice how Jesus, who has all power and authority, displays humility in his submission to his Father.
Luke 22:42 “saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.””
If you’re a follower of Jesus, your power comes not from strength or might, but by obedience. Humbly submitting to King Jesus.
True strength is found in following God, not in proving yourself.
Application for students: Where do you feel pressure to prove yourself (sports, grades, friends, social media)? Jesus shows us humility is strength—trusting God’s will is better than trying to look impressive.

2. Jesus Brings Witnesses (vv. 33–38)

In Jewish law, 2–3 witnesses were required. Jesus has more:
John the Baptist (human witness) vv. 33-35
Miracles (powerful proof) vv. 36
The Father (divine voice) vv. 37-38
These religious leaders had the entire Torah memorized and Jesus tells them “You do not have his word abiding in you.”
To have abiding, is to do. To live it out. They were missing the whole entire point.
If this was a courtroom, Jesus would win the case.
What “evidence” do you see in your own life or others’ that Jesus is real? (Changed lives (Camden, Riley, 12 baptism last week) , answered prayers, creation’s beauty, your own story).

3. The Bible Points to Jesus (vv. 39–47)

The Pharisees loved studying Scripture but missed the point—it all pointed to Jesus.
John 5:39–40You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.”
Moses (their hero) actually “accuses” them because they missed the One he wrote about.
John 5:45–47 “Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope. For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?””
Application for students: You can know about the Bible but still miss Jesus. Are you looking for Him in what you read, or just checking boxes?

Closing Challenge – The Verdict Is Yours

Just like in a trial, the evidence is clear. Jesus is the Son of God.
The real question isn’t “Is there enough proof?” but “Will you believe and follow Him?”
