Be Ready, So you don't have to get ready

Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11 Title: “Living in the Light of His Coming”

Introduction

Church, the people of Thessalonica wanted to know when Jesus was coming back. And Paul tells them: The exact day and hour? You don’t need to know. What you need to know is how to live until He comes.

This passage teaches us that Jesus’ return is certain, sudden, and glorious. But instead of worrying about calendars and clocks, Paul calls us to live as children of the light. Somebody say: “I’m living in the light!”

Point 1: Stay Awake and Alert (vv.1–6)

Paul says the day of the Lord will come “as a thief in the night.” That means unexpected, sudden, and unstoppable. The world will be saying, “Peace and safety,” but destruction will come swiftly.

But watch this: Paul says, “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief… Ye are all the children of light.”

Illustration (young listeners): If you’ve ever fallen asleep in class, you know you can miss the whole lesson. Spiritually, if you fall asleep on God, you’ll miss what He’s doing. Stay awake!

Illustration (seasoned listeners): Think about a night watchman. His job is to stay alert, because danger could come at any time. As believers, we are spiritual watchmen—called to be sober, prayerful, and ready.

Call and response: “Stay awake!” — “Stay alert!”

We don’t know when He’s coming, but we know He’s coming. So don’t get drowsy in your walk with God.

Point 2: Put On the Armor of Faith, Love, and Hope (vv.7–8)

Paul continues: “But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.”

He reminds us we are in a spiritual battle, and the way to stay ready is to put on God’s armor.

Faith protects our heart.

Love guards our relationships.

Hope shields our mind from despair.

Illustration (young listeners): Athletes put on their gear before the game—helmet, pads, shoes. Without it, they’d be injured. We need God’s gear for the spiritual game of life.

Illustration (seasoned listeners): In our community, we know what it’s like to need protection. But no shield is stronger than the shield of faith, no helmet stronger than the hope of salvation.

Call and response: “Suit up!” — “Put on your armor!”

Point 3: Encourage One Another with Hope (vv.9–11)

Paul closes with this powerful word: “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that… we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another…”

This means: We’re not destined for wrath—we’re destined for salvation. Jesus already took our judgment on the cross. And because He lives, whether we’re alive or asleep in death, we shall live with Him!

Illustration (young listeners): Think about waiting for your ride after school. When you know who’s picking you up, you wait with confidence. We know Jesus is coming back for us—so we wait with hope.

Illustration (seasoned listeners): Many of us grew up singing, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!” That song wasn’t just music—it was encouragement that no matter what life brings, we belong to Him.

Call and response: “We’ve got hope!” — “Hope in Jesus!”

Celebration / Close

Beloved, Paul tells us how to live in the light of His coming:

Stay awake and alert.

Put on the armor of faith, love, and hope.

Encourage one another with hope in Christ.

And here’s the good news: The reason we can live in the light is because Jesus, the Light of the World, stepped into our darkness. He died on the cross, He rose on the third day, and He’s coming back again!

And when He comes:

Every tear will be wiped away.

Every wrong will be made right.

Every saint will rejoice in His presence.

So until then, we will keep on walking in the light! We will keep on trusting in His Word! We will keep on holding to His hand!

“He’s coming back again!”

“I’ll be ready!”

“Jesus is Lord forevermore!”
