Stand Strong in God’s Faithfulness

Jeremiah 17:7–8 ESV

7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

Exegetical Idea (Propositional Statement): Those who trust in the Lord experience stability and fruitfulness because of His unwavering faithfulness.

Homiletical Idea (Big Idea): Stand strong by trusting in God’s faithfulness, no matter the season.

Introduction

They say you don’t know how strong your anchor is until the storm comes. Anybody can look steady when the sun is shining, but when the winds blow, when the bills pile up, when the doctor shakes his head, when friends walk away — that’s when you find out what you’re really standing on.

Life has a way of testing us. Storms come, droughts arrive, and sometimes it feels like the very ground beneath us is shifting. People look for stability in money, friends, family, or careers, but when the pressure comes, those things can fail.

But Jeremiah paints us a different picture. He says the one who trusts in the Lord is like a tree planted by the waters—rooted, nourished, stable, fruitful. No matter the drought, no matter the heat, the tree stands.

That’s the message for us today: Stand Strong in God’s Faithfulness.

Transition: Let’s walk through this passage together and see three ways we can stand strong in God’s faithfulness.

Trust God’s Faithfulness for Your Stability (v.7)

7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.

Jeremiah makes a contrast. Those who trust in man dry up like a bush in the desert (vv. 5–6). But the one who trusts in the Lord is called blessed. That blessing means God’s favor, God’s presence, God’s hand upon your life.

The Hebrew word for trust (בָּטַח batach) means to lean fully, to rest confidently, to put the full weight of your life into God’s hands.

Illustration: A child jumps into their father’s arms without hesitation. They don’t calculate. They don’t second-guess. They just trust.

That’s how God wants us to live! Stop holding back. Stop trying to figure everything out on your own. Stop standing on shaky ground. If a child can jump into their daddy’s arms, surely you can jump into the everlasting arms of your Father! When you lean on Him, you don’t have to wonder if He’ll catch you—because He’s caught you before, and He’ll catch you again!

Application:

• When you trust in God, you stand firm when others collapse.

• You don’t have to depend on the shifting sands of people’s opinions, job security, or your own strength.

• Stand strong knowing your life is anchored in the Rock who cannot be moved.

Transition: But stability doesn’t just come in calm times—it shows up when the heat is turned up.

Rely on God’s Faithfulness Through Every Season (v.8a)

Notice: the heat still comes. Jeremiah never promises that the believer won’t face pressure. But because the tree is planted by the stream, its source is deeper than the surface.

In the desert climate of Jeremiah’s day, water meant survival. To be “planted by the stream” meant safety, supply, and strength.

Illustration: Think of LeBron James. He endures the grind of long NBA seasons not because the schedule is easy, but because he prepares. He invests in his body, so when the heat of the season comes, he can last. Likewise, when your soul is rooted in God — prayer, worship, Word — you’re prepared for whatever season comes.

Application:

• Don’t fear the heat—God’s faithfulness will keep you green.

• When bills rise, when sickness strikes, when grief hits, your leaves can still remain green.

• Stay connected to your source, and you will endure every season.

Yes, the heat will come, but you don’t have to break under pressure! Trouble may rise, but you don’t have to lose your peace. The fire may burn, but you don’t have to be consumed. Why? Because your roots are deep! Your strength is not in yourself—it’s in the living God who never runs dry!

Transition: And not only do you endure the season — you actually thrive.

Produce Fruit Because of God’s Faithfulness (v.8b)

8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

This is the miracle of grace: fruit in a drought. While others wither, the one who trusts God still produces.

Jesus said in John 15:5, “Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.” The fruit is the evidence of God’s faithfulness in your life.

Illustration: Many of the greatest gospel songs were written in seasons of struggle. Out of tears, chains, and pain, God brought forth songs that still bless us today. That’s fruit in a drought.

Application:

• Your peace in trouble is fruit.

• Your witness in hardship is fruit.

• Your love, joy, patience, and hope are fruit.

• And that fruit blesses others and points them to Jesus Christ.

Don’t let your drought deceive you—God can still use you! While others are drying up, you can keep producing. While others are giving up, you can keep standing. While others are panicking, you can keep praising. Because when your life is rooted in God’s faithfulness, your fruit will keep showing up in every season!

Conclusion

Jeremiah shows us the life that trusts in the Lord:

• Stable like a tree planted.

• Secure through the heat of life’s seasons.

• Still fruitful even in drought.

All because of one truth: God is faithful.

Can I tell you today? God has never failed His people!

• He didn’t fail Abraham on Mount Moriah.

• He didn’t fail Moses at the Red Sea.

• He didn’t fail Daniel in the lions’ den.

• He didn’t fail Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace.

And He won’t fail you.

He didn’t fail when they marched Jesus up Calvary’s hill.

He didn’t fail when they nailed His hands and His feet.

He didn’t fail when He bowed His head and died.

He didn’t fail when they buried Him in a borrowed tomb.

But early Sunday morning—He got up with all power in His hands!

And because He lives, you can stand strong in God’s faithfulness!
