Ezekiel 14:1–23 NASB 2020

Then some elders of Israel came to me and sat down before me. And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put in front of their faces the stumbling block of their wrongdoing. Should I let Myself be consulted by them at all? Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Anyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, puts in front of his face the stumbling block of his wrongdoing, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will let Myself answer him in the matter in view of the multitude of his idols, in order to take hold of the hearts of the house of Israel who have turned away from Me due to all their idols.” ’ “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations. For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who reside in Israel, who deserts Me, sets up his idols in his heart, puts in front of his face the stumbling block of his wrongdoing, and then comes to the prophet to request something of Me for himself, I the Lord will let Myself answer him Myself. I will set My face against that person and make him a sign and a proverb, and I will eliminate him from among My people. So you will know that I am the Lord. “But if the prophet is persuaded so that he speaks a word, it is I, the Lord, who have persuaded that prophet; and I will stretch out My hand against him and eliminate him from among My people Israel. And they will bear the punishment for their wrongdoing; as the wrongdoing of the inquirer is, so the wrongdoing of the prophet will be, in order that the house of Israel may no longer stray from Me and no longer defile themselves with all their offenses. So they will be My people, and I shall be their God,” ’ declares the Lord God.” Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, if a country sins against Me by being unfaithful, and I stretch out My hand against it, destroy its supply of bread, send famine against it, and eliminate from it both human and animal life, even though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job were in its midst, by their own righteousness they could only save themselves,” declares the Lord God. “If I were to cause vicious animals to pass through the land and they depopulated it, and it became desolate so that no one would pass through it because of the animals, though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares the Lord God, “they could not save either their sons or their daughters. They alone would be saved, but the country would be desolate. Or if I were to bring a sword on that country and say, ‘A sword is to pass through the country,’ and I eliminated human and animal life from it, even though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares the Lord God, “they could not save either their sons or their daughters, but they alone would be saved. Or if I were to send a plague against that country and pour out My wrath on it in blood to eliminate man and animal from it, even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in its midst, as I live,” declares the Lord God, “they could not save either their son or their daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.” For this is what the Lord God says: “How much more when I send My four severe judgments against Jerusalem: sword, famine, vicious animals, and plague to eliminate human and animal life from it! Yet, behold, survivors will be left in it who will be brought out, both sons and daughters. Behold, they are going to come out to you, and you will see their conduct and actions; then you will be comforted for the disaster which I have brought against Jerusalem for everything which I have brought upon it. Then they will comfort you when you see their conduct and actions, for you will know that I have not done without reason whatever I did to it,” declares the Lord God.

  Do You Declare YHWH as Your Lord that You Save Your Soul?

Ezekiel’s name, God will strengthen, like the names of so many others of the saints of old, was singularly appropriate to his life and work. He speaks of himself (Eze1:3) as a “priest, the son of Buzi.” Of Buzi trothing whatever is known; but the fact that Ezekiel himself was of the Aaronic family is a most important one in the interpretation of his writings; for he was evidently “every inch a churchman,” and his strong ecclesiastical character pervades and gives tone to his prophecies.

Date

Ezekiel dates many of his prophecies, and all the dates fall between 593 and 571 B.C some 22 years !!!!

Structure/ Purpose

The reliability of God's word. To an audience that found it hard to imagine that God would ever allow Jerusalem to fall to foreign con quest, Ezekiel preached repeatedly, almost incessantly, that Jerusalem would indeed be destroyed (Eze 1-24). It was, and God's word, once widely doubted, was vindicated. To a discouraged exile community that saw the other nations of the world doing fine while their nation lay in ruins, Ezekiel preached lengthy oracles predicting the doom of those very nations whose prosperity seemed at the time unlikely ever to end (Eze 25-32). All that he said came true, much of it in the lifetime of his audience, as the rapidly unfolding events of the early sixth century B.C. proved the words the Lord had given him to have been accurate beyond any possibility of human invention. To a people who seemed to themselves small and whose discouragement after the final conquest of Judah was surely very great, he preached about a new age, including the vast increase of God's people, their coming new relationship to the Lord, and the holiness God would bring about in their midst, in spite of the fact that they could not hope to manage it on their own. In this, his inspired words remarkably anticipated the Christian experience and look forward to the rewards and characteristics of eternal life in heaven.

The glory of God. Ezekiel was moved to portray dramatically the relationship of the glorious presence of God to His blessing. His visionary witnessing of the divine glory leaving the temple (Eze 10) and later returning (Eze 43) is a symbol of the transition from the old age to the new in Christ.

Individual responsibility. In Eze 18 and Eze 33 are contained some of the most thorough, carefully expressed, and absolutely clear discourses on the topic of the responsibility of the individual for his or her own sins found anywhere in the Bible. These passages provide a valuable correction to the potential errors of fatalism, rigid determinism, and blame-avoidant judgmentalism.

Israel's long history of sin. Throughout the book reference is made to the fact that the punishment of the loss of the Promised Land and its attendant miseries of population decimation, exile, and deprivation were not arbitrarily or suddenly decided upon. Rather, they had been earned many times over as the centuries had gone by and Israel stubbornly continued in its steady pattern of sin and disobedience to the law of God.

God's holiness and our responsibility for obedience. A holy God cannot tolerate disobedience, which defies people and institutions, and therefore separates them from God's saving blessing. Again and again Ezekiel's prophecies describe the disobedience of God's covenant shown by Israel or other nations, and in the magnificent vision of Eze 40-48 the prophet is allowed to see the new Promised Land and its holy city and temple, all symbolizing the orderliness and peace with God that obedience to a holy God brings.

God's transcendence. The book begins and ends with visions. These visions are of a great God and what He can and will do. He is not limited to Israel's tiny boundaries or narrow interests. He is a universal God who will judge all the nations, untie the bonds that keep His people oppressed and downtrodden, free them from their slavery to sins of all sorts, and rule the nations. He will give His people a home forever, where they will enjoy His presence and worship Him rightly, the Gentile and the Jew both sharing in the eschatological kingdom, citizens of the eternal Promised Land.

Application

YHWH I am truly blessed and honored this morning that I know that You are my Lord, My God, that I repent of all my sins and lay them at Your feet that I am redeemed, I am (1) cell in Your Body for all eternity.
