Welcome to Vertical Church
We begin each Sunday with a time of prayer and singing.
Let us worship God
Call to Worship - Psalm 59:17
17 O my strength, I will sing praises to You; For God is my stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.
Scripture Reading - Romans 8:31-32
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who indeed did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?
Introduction: God is For Us Romans 8: No Condemnation, No Separation
We are currently in the Book of Romans and the theme of this series is God is For us.
In chapters 1-7 we are saved by God through God from the wrath of God
In chapter 3 - all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God the all is US and not THEM
In chapter 5 - therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God and the love OF God in our hearts
In Chapter 6 - the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ
In chapter 7 - we are clothed in Christ’s righteousness but battle our sinful nature - but Jesus Christ will rescue us from our wretched bodies of sin.
We are saved from the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and one day the presence of sin
But how does this happen? Romans 8 tells us
(1) There is no Condemnation
1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Despite the sinfulness of chapter 7 there is no condemnation. You are saved, you are redeemed, you are God’s child
Once again we see the phrase In Christ
Salvation is a trinitarian work - Salvation is the work of not just the Father, not just the Son, not just the Holy Spirit
Salvation is the work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
“Each of the three Persons in the blessed Trinity is concerned with our salvation: with the Father it is predestination; with the Son propitiation; with the Spirit regeneration. The Father chose us; the Son died for us; the Spirit quickens us. The Father was concerned about us; the Son shed His blood for us, the Spirit performs His work within us. What the One did was eternal, what the Other did was external, what the Spirit does is internal.”
~ Arthur Pink, “The Sovereignty of God”
R.C. Sproul explains salvation is the work of the triune God: the Father plans redemption, the Son accomplishes it through his life, death, and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit applies this accomplished redemption to believers, uniting them to Christ and giving them the ability to believe.
This unified work of the Father, Son, and Spirit reminds us that Salvation is an eternal agreement determined in eternity past
(2) There is no separation
Romans 8:35–39 (LSB)
35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction, or turmoil, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?… 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Who will separate us from the love of Christ? What can separate us from the love of Christ?
to separate objects by introducing considerable space or isolation—‘to separate, to isolate one from another.
We are in Christ, we are in the love of Christ, Christ will never leave us or forsake us
And not only are we in the love of Christ, the love of Christ is in us - Romans 5:5
5 and hope does not put to shame, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Which of these do you struggle with?
We are not afraid of death but of how we will die
Let’s talk about life and how it tries to separate us from the love of God - idols, priorities, decisions
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
Who will help us in life?
Why is He called the Holy Spirit?
Now may God be your exceeding joy, Christ your unfailing hope, and the Spirit your unfailing comforter, in all your worship and work and troubles until Jesus comes. Amen.
God be with you til we meet again
Exodus 15 (LSB)
2 “Yah is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will extol Him. 3 “Yahweh is a warrior; Yahweh is His name. 13 “In Your lovingkindness You have guided the people whom You have redeemed; In Your strength You have led them to Your holy habitation.
