Post Feeding

Remember that Jesus got interrupted when He needed rest before he performed the miracle of feeding the 5,000. He didn’t forget.

So what does Jesus do? He sends off his followers on their way.

He says goodbye to all the people who listened to Him teach and who he fed.

Then He goes back to what He originally set out to do and pray in a quiet place.

Jesus is God

Jesus can see them between 3-6am. That’s a miracle in itself.

“He wanted to pass by them” is a direct reference to God passing in front of Moses when He reveals himself in Exodus.

Exodus 33:18–23 “And Moses said, “Show me your glory.” And the Lord said, “I will make all my goodness pass before your face, and I will proclaim the Lord by name before you; I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, I will show mercy to whom I will show mercy.”But he added, “You cannot see my face, for no one can see me and live.”The Lord said, “Here is a place by me; you will station yourself on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and will cover you with my hand while I pass by.Then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back, but my face must not be seen.””

“It is I” may also be a reference to how God introduces Himself to Moses.

Exodus 3:14 “God said to Moses, “I am that I am.” And he said, “You must say this to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ””

To the Jewish audience, it would be almost impossible to miss all these things.

Jesus got in the boat with them and calmed the storm (again).

It’s ironic that the reader would have no problem seeing who Jesus is showing himself to be but that the disciples couldn’t see it for themselves yet.

What does this tell us about Jesus.

When we are going through struggles and hardships Jesus is there with us. He gets in the boat with us.

Hebrews 4:14–16 “Therefore since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace whenever we need help.”

Once again this is a good reminder that Jesus is ready to be our savior whenever we call on Him, not when we clean ourselves up. In our darkest place, in our lowest point, Jesus is there with open arms to welcome us.

Romans 5:6–8 “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (For rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person perhaps someone might possibly dare to die.)But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
