Calling upon God as an act of worship
Calling upon God as an act of worship
By those who depend upon him and proclaim his name
By those who depend upon him and proclaim his name
To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.
See also Ge 12:8; Ge 26:25; 1 Ch 16:8; Ps 86:5; Ps 116:2; Ps 116:17; Job 27:10; 2 Ti 2:22
From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD.
So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD and pitched his tent there. And there Isaac’s servants dug a well.
Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
Because he inclined his ear to me,
therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the LORD.
Will he take delight in the Almighty?
Will he call upon God at all times?
So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
Those who do not acknowledge God or call upon his name
Those who do not acknowledge God or call upon his name
Ps 14:4; Ps 79:6; Is 65:1; Je 10:25; Zep 3:9
Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
who eat up my people as they eat bread
and do not call upon the LORD?
Pour out your anger on the nations
that do not know you,
and on the kingdoms
that do not call upon your name!
I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for me;
I was ready to be found by those who did not seek me.
I said, “Here I am, here I am,”
to a nation that was not called by my name.
Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not,
and on the peoples that call not on your name,
for they have devoured Jacob;
they have devoured him and consumed him,
and have laid waste his habitation.
“For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples
to a pure speech,
that all of them may call upon the name of the LORD
and serve him with one accord.

from the depths of the pit;

Moses
Moses
Ex 17:10–13; Ex 17:15; Ex 32:11–13; Ex 32:30; Nu 14:13–19; Dt 9:26–29
But Moses implored the LORD his God and said, “O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’ ”
Samuel
Samuel
Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD for you.” So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the LORD and fasted on that day and said there, “We have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah. Now when the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. And the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the LORD our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. And Samuel cried out to the LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him.

And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.”
