INTRODUCTION:

I. Manifested in His Character

Isaiah 42:1 NKJV
1 “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
DID YOU NOTICE THE TITLE: MY SERVANT, ELECT OR CHOSEN
AND THE ACTIONS OF GOD: UPHOLDS AND DELIGHTS
GOD SAID THAT HE PUT HIS SPIRIT UPON HIM
AND THIS ONE WILL BRING JUSTICE TO THE GENTILES
This makes clear that everything the Servant is and does represents God’s nature.
LOOK AT VERSE 2
Isaiah 42:2 NKJV
2 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
He will not shout or raise his voice in public.
HIS CALMNESS AND TENDERNESS were SHOWN IN HIS SPEECH.
Isaiah 42:3 NKJV
3 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth.
He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle.
Represents the weak and depressed in spirit, the lowly and dejected. Christ would deal tenderly with such, not violently
He will bring justice to all who have been wronged.
GOD IS ABLE TO
ENERGIZE THE EXHAUSTED
FORTIFY THE FEEBLE
GOD IS ABLE TO
BRACE THE BROKEN-DOWN
SUPPORT THE SPENT
FRESHEN THE FRAIL
Isaiah 42:4 NKJV
4 He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”
He will not falter or lose heart until justice prevails throughout the earth. Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for his instruction.”
His gentleness toward the weak, His Spirit-filled ministry, and His determination to bring justice reflect the name of the LORD as merciful, just, and faithful.
The Servant acts in such a way that the nations see the greatness of the LORD’s character.

II. Maintained by His Claim

Isaiah 42:5 NKJV
5 Thus says God the Lord, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it:
Thus says God the LORD,
GOD INTRODUCES HIMSELF AS “THE LORD, WHO CREATED THE HEAVENS… WHO GIVES
Who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it,
Who gives breath to the people on it,
And spirit to those who walk on it:
BREATH TO THE PEOPLE ON IT” (V. 5).
HIS NAME IS TIED TO HIS ROLE AS CREATOR.
HE IS
MAKER AND CREATOR
HE IS
THE WISDOM OF THE WISE,
THE POWER OF THE POWERFUL,
THE ANCIENT OF DAYS,
THE RULER OF RULERS,
THE LEADER OF LEADERS,
THE OVERSEER OF THE OVERCOMERS, AND
THE SOVEREIGN LORD OF ALL THAT WAS AND IS AND IS TO COME.
Isaiah 42:6–7 NKJV
6 “I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, 7 To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
IN VERSE 6–7,
THE SERVANT IS CALLED TO BE A COVENANT FOR THE PEOPLE AND A LIGHT TO THE NATIONS. THIS SHOWS GOD’S NAME IS NOT LIMITED TO ISRAEL, BUT MEANT TO SHINE TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH.
THE SERVANT’S MISSION—OPENING BLIND EYES, FREEING CAPTIVES—IS PART OF GOD’S PLAN TO SHOW THAT ONLY HIS NAME SAVES, NOT IDOLS.
HIS LOVE IS Undeniable
HIS WILL IS Unvarying
HIS MERCY IS Unusual
HIS JUDGMENT IS Unswayable
HIS GRACE IS Unsurpassable
HIS WORD IS Unshakable
HIS POWER IS Unbeatable
Isaiah 42:8 NKJV
8 I am the Lord, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.
VERSE 8 IS THE KEY: “I AM THE LORD; THAT IS MY NAME; MY GLORY I GIVE TO NO OTHER, NOR MY PRAISE TO CARVED IDOLS.”
HERE THE LORD EXPLICITLY CONNECTS HIS NAME WITH HIS EXCLUSIVE GLORY.
Exodus – Known through deliverance from Egypt & judgment on oppressors.
Leviticus – Known through holiness and sanctification.
Deuteronomy – Known through covenant faithfulness.
Prophets – Known through judgment and restoration (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, Joel).
Psalms – Known through worship, creation, and deliverance.
New Testament – Known ultimately in Christ, the full revelation of God.
Isaiah 42:9 NKJV
9 Behold, the former things have come to pass, And new things I declare; Before they spring forth I tell you of them.”
THE “FORMER THINGS” AND “NEW THINGS” (V. 9) HIGHLIGHT THAT GOD’S NAME IS ALSO TIED TO HIS FAITHFULNESS TO HIS WORD.

III. Magnified by His Command

Isaiah 42:10 NKJV
10 Sing to the Lord a new song, And His praise from the ends of the earth, You who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, You coastlands and you inhabitants of them!
BECAUSE OF THE WORK OF THE LORD
BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS
AND BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS DONE
THE COMMAND HAS GONE FORTH
SING TO THE LORD A NEW SONG
BECAUSE HE HAS DONE SOMETHING NEW
HIS MERCY AND GRACE HAS EXTENDED TO ALL THE WORLD
WHY?
